Godfrey Khotso Mokoena (born March 6, 1985 in Heidelberg , Transvaal ) is a South African athlete . In 2008 he was indoor world champion and Olympic runner-up in the long jump .

Career

As a teenager, Mokoena was a high jumper , and at the 2001 World Youth Championships, he finished fifth. In 2002 he took part in the Junior World Championships in the long jump and was twelfth. Two years later he became junior world champion in triple jump and second in long jump. In between he finished second in the triple jump and third in the long jump at the Pan-African Games in 2003 . In Athens at the 2004 Olympic Games , Mokoena failed in the triple jump qualification.

At the 2005 World Championships , Mokoena took seventh place in the long jump. In March 2006, Mokoena was fifth in the long jump at the 2006 World Indoor Championships in Moscow . A week and a half later, Mokoena competed in the Commonwealth Games in Melbourne . There he finished fourth in the long jump and won silver in the triple jump behind Phillips Idowu . At the 2006 African Championships, Mokoena won silver in the long and triple jump. In 2007 he focused on the long jump. He won bronze at the Africa Games in Algiers and finished fifth at the World Championships in Osaka . At the World Indoor Championships in Valencia in 2008 he jumped 8.08 m and won the title two centimeters ahead of the British Chris Tomlinson . At the 2008 Olympic Games , Mokoena succeeded in the long jump final in the fourth attempt, a jump of 8.24 m, with which he won silver behind Irving Saladino . He was also second with 8.47 m at the World Athletics Championships in Berlin in 2009 , this time behind Dwight Phillips . In 2010 he finished second at the World Indoor Championships in Doha and won the African Championships in Nairobi .

At the 2014 African Athletics Championships in Marrakech , he won the gold medal in the triple jump and the silver medal in the long jump.
