Kirovsk ( Russian Кировск ) is a city in Murmansk Oblast in Russia with 28,625 inhabitants (as of October 14, 2010). The mining town is located about 175 km south of Murmansk on the southern edge of the Chibinen on Lake Bolshoi Vudjawr .
history
The place was founded in 1929 under the name Chibinogorsk ( Хибиногорск ) to mine apatite and nepheline deposits that had been discovered by an expedition led by Alexander Fersman . In 1931 the place received city rights and was renamed in 1934 in honor of the functionary Sergei Kirov , who had planned to build up the mining industry in Kirovsk and was murdered that year.

Attractions
One of the northernmost botanical gardens in the world is located in Kirovsk . The tourist significance of the region as a ski area and as a starting point for hikes is increasing.
