Kurt Felgner

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Kurt Felgner (born March 26, 1912 in Osnabrück ; † 2002 ) was a German music teacher and choir director . After the war, he set up teaching institutions and choirs that were highly regarded and pioneering until the 1970s.

Life

Kurt Felgner was born on March 26, 1912 in Osnabrück. At the age of eight he received private piano lessons, on which from 1926 he built his piano and theory lessons at the city conservatory . After taking his Abitur exam, he continued his training with Gustav König in Essen and Otto Volkmann in Duisburg , where he also learned to conduct . The decision to pursue a musical career was made in 1923, when the eleven-year-old took part in an oratorio performance in the Marienkirche in Osnabrück as a choirboy and was deeply impressed by the atmosphere. From 1935 to 1938 he intensified his studies both at the State University of Music in Cologne under the wing of well-known professors (e.g. Eugen Papst and Philipp Jarnach ), and at the University of Cologne , where he added the subjects of musicology , theater studies and speech training . Finally, he expanded the spectrum to include the educational aspect by taking a course at the Berlin University of Music Education in Charlottenburg Palace . Here were Gotthold Frotscher , Hans Chemin-Petit and Heinrich Spitta his professors.

Thereafter, Felgner had several offers. The rich cultural life was the decisive factor for the Styrian Leoben , where on April 1, 1939 he took up a position as a music school director within the Styrian music school. He was drafted into the Wehrmacht on May 6, 1940 and did not return until September 15, 1945 as a released prisoner of war . But he only worked for a short time in Leoben, because he was given the chance to help his native city of Osnabrück with the musical and cultural restart. Under difficult conditions in terms of space, instruments and administration, he created the municipal music school with a singing school, youth music school, conservatory and music teacher seminar . At first he had to do this all by himself, even without an office. He succeeded in rebuilding the Poggenburg, an old aristocratic court , where the music school could finally move into rooms. At the same time as these strenuous pioneering activities, he taught at the Ratsgymnasium . He also founded and directed the North German Chamber Orchestra, the Spatzenkantorei and the Osnabrück Chamber Choir. In 1947, at the Ansbacher Bachwochen , the choir gave two sensational concerts, namely in the large courtyard of the Residenz and in the Johanniskirche . In August 1949 he was invited again to Ansbach, this time to take part in the 1st International Student Music Festival. The Bavarian Radio asked to be allowed to make recordings. In 1950 Felgner was appointed state consultant for music in the Osnabrück administrative region . Shortly afterwards he signed the founding protocol of the German section of the Jeunesses Musicales in Bayreuth . In the following year he traveled with the chamber choir to the 7th World Congress of Jeunesses Musicales International in Geneva , where the vocal performance attracted international praise. Tours through Switzerland and Spain followed in 1952, with unanimously positive press coverage. At the end of March 1954, Felgner left Osnabrück for Hanover . Setbacks in the attempt to raise the music school to the rank of a music academy or at least to prevent the restrictions on teacher training had weakened him alongside all his tireless commitment. He handed over his responsibilities to Karl Schäfer, but in the case of the chamber choir an inexorable process of dissolution began.

My own new main task was an educational one: music teacher at the Bismarck high school and later also at the Schiller high school . Again he became active as a founder by calling the Lower Saxony Singing Circle into being, which after his departure in 1955 under his successor Willi Träder, in contrast to the Osnabrück Choir, had a successful future. The decisive factor in moving to Weilburg / Lahn to the Pedagogical Institute as a lecturer for music and its didactics was again a decision by higher-level agencies that was not approved by Felgner, namely that the city teachers in Hanover were to be transferred to state care.

In late summer, interns were looked after in northeastern Hesse , before the theoretical training of candidate teachers began in the Lahn city in the winter semester of 1955/56 . "Weilburger Hochschulchor" was the name of the foundation that Felgner had given to this place of activity. The choir stood out from all the events that Felgner organized and conducted, the chamber music evenings, soloist lectures, orchestral concerts, school operas and precisely those choir concerts. In the fourth year of its existence, it not only appeared regularly in its own city, but also at choir meetings, music lecturers' conferences and on the radio. The repertoire for the radio stations included chorales , choral music and folk songs .

The transfer of the music teacher training to Gießen and Frankfurt necessitated a decision between these two cities, and Felgner, who had worked often enough in the provinces , preferred Frankfurt. Also in favor of Frankfurt were the teaching positions accepted in 1956 at the Hochschule für Musik and at Dr. Hoch's Conservatory as well as the direction of the university choir and from 1957 also the Frankfurt teachers choir. Although the teaching duties in Weilburg only slowly ended in 1963, Felgner was nominally associate professor for music education at the University of Education within the Johann Wolfgang Goethe University from 1961 . The establishment of the institute took about a year, then he became its director. It took another year for the Frankfurt Bach Choir and the Camerata instrumentale pro musica university orchestra to present themselves to the public. Both ensembles were facing a ten-year heyday with domestic and international tours, radio recordings and recordings . Felgner was appointed full professor in 1964. From 1963 to 1965 he and his elective students took part in the International School Music Education Weeks in Salzburg , where from 1965 he himself taught for many years under the organizational direction of Leo Rinderer. Rinderer was again among the many internationally known music educators whom Felgner hired between 1963 and 1968 for the Rüdesheim days for music educators he initiated. With the integration into the faculties of the Goethe University, against which Felgner, who was critical of the scientification, defended himself in vain, the institute directorate ended in 1973.

He regarded the years 1961 to 1973 as his most fulfilling. During this time, the preparation (from 1969) and the official start of work (1971) of the Central Office for Music Pedagogical Documentation, which was initially a documentation facility of the Institute for Music Education led by Felgner, also took place. Hived off in 1975, the director of the institute, who had not been the director of the institute since 1973, was given its management. In this function, Felgner reached retirement age in 1980 . Despite his retirement, he continued to work there for many years, just as he did university teaching and examination assignments until 1982. He replaced the latter with the honorary position of an early childhood introduction to music in Bad Homburg vor der Höhe .

With his wife Maria Bruxellesbach he had three children of their own, a son and two daughters. Kurt Felgner died in the spring of 2002.
