South Ayrshire ( Scottish Gaelic Siorrachd Inbhir Àir a Deas ) is one of 32  Council Areas in Scotland . It covers the southern part of traditional Ayrshire and borders East Ayrshire and Dumfries and Galloway . From 1975 to 1996, South Ayrshire formed a district of the Strathclyde region under the name Kyle and Carrick .
