La Feria is a city in Cameron County in the US - State of Texas . The city dates back to a Spanish settlement in the 18th century and is not far from the border with Mexico . The population totaled 7,271 in 2016. The city name means “The Faire”.

Within Cameron County, La Feria is located in the far west, near the border with neighboring Hidalgo County . Neighboring towns and cities are Bluetown, Solis and the city of Mercedes in Hidalgo County . Of Harlingen , the second largest city of Cameron County, La Feria is about 10 kilometers away from the district capital Brownsville about 40 kilometers from Edinburgh , the county seat of Hidalgo County about 30 kilometers. The most important connecting road is the US Highway 83 , which runs past the northern edge of the Rio Grande Valley. In the city center, this is crossed by Farm Road 506, which leads south towards the Mexican border . Immediately southwest of the city limits, La Feria has a nature reserve ; to the south there is a small freshwater lake . The landscape is flat and characterized by the mixture of coastal prairie and bushy low- tree vegetation that is typical of the Texas Gulf coast .

The area of ​​the later town was first settled in 1777. The first settlers family, named Ballí, founded several farms and maintained control of the land until the middle of the 19th century . The settlement was an agricultural center until the 20th century . In 1909 La Feria became a permanent town. The place name was taken from the nickname of the contract charter of the first settlers. The German translation for feria is fair . The post office was built in the same year . In 1911, a station two kilometers from the city of the St. Louis, Brownsville and Mexico Railway was added. In 1915, La Feria had a population of 200, a bank , two churches, and a weekly newspaper - the La Feria Leader . In 1925, the population estimates ranged from 236 to 825.

The city was officially founded in 1933. The population had meanwhile grown to 1,594 inhabitants. In the second quarter of the 20th century, the village had around 90 shops and businesses , three schools and two churches. In 1948 the number of inhabitants was estimated at 2,630. In 1967 the city had 90 local businesses - including cotton spinning mills , processing facilities for fruit and vegetable products and a manufacturer of liquid fertilizers . In addition, there was tourism and related facilities such as the Rosita Longoria House , built in 1909, and the La Feria Museum . In 2000 the number of inhabitants had exceeded 6000. Like other cities and towns in Cameron County, La Feria was hit by the effects of Hurricane Dolly , which caused considerable damage with floods and power outages .

Demographics

According to data from the United States Census Bureau in 2016, the population in that year was 7,241. 3,554 of them were male , 3,687 female . 5,053 inhabitants were 18 years of age or older, 2,188 children or adolescents , 1,024 older than 65 years. The median age was 35.8 years. According to the census definition race , 6,281 of the respondents described themselves as Hispanic or Latino (86.7%), 819 as white (11.3%) and 141 as Asian (1.9%).
