The Lafnitz (Hungarian Lapincs, Slov. Lapinč ) is a 114 kilometer long left tributary of the Raab in eastern Austria .

geography

It rises as Lafnitzbach in the Styrian Joglland , flows around the Vorau high basin and forms the border between Styria and Burgenland from the municipality of Lafnitz to the municipality of Rudersdorf . After it has taken up the Feistritz , it flows a little further through the southern Burgenland ( Jennersdorf district ), forms the border with Hungary for 800 m and flows into the after 500 m as Lapincs near the Hungarian border town Szentgotthárd ( St. Gotthard ) Raab (Hungarian Rába ).

Tributaries are u. a. the Waldbach , the Weissenbach and the Festenburger Schlossbach .

natural reserve

After the confluence of the Lafnitz and Feistritz rivers , the mean flow rate is around 15 m³ / s. Especially in its upper and middle reaches (especially at Loipersdorf-Kitzladen , Markt Allhau and Wolfau ), but also in the section between Rudersdorf and Fürstenfeld (so-called " Fronius-Auen "), the Lafnitz has retained the character of a very natural river - it still offers a habitat for some rare animal and plant species.

These species include the water hazel , the lung gentian , the globe flower , the kingfisher and the black stork and, among the butterflies, the light blue butterfly . Biotopes that have become rare, such as whistle grass meadows , tall herbaceous meadows and alluvial forests are characteristics of the Lafnitz valley.

The Lafnitztal has been the 11th of 19 RAMSAR areas in Austria since 2002 and is therefore subject to the Ramsar Convention . The entire Lafnitz is a Natura 2000 area.

At Loipersdorf there are large pastures ( alpine pastures in the valley ), to the north of which there is an impressive meandering stretch . However, the pasture economy has declined sharply in Hungary and southern Burgenland. Angus and Galloway cattle are now used to maintain the meadows and pastures . The slowly growing cattle breeds enrich the menu in southern Burgenland as Zickental moor oxen . The Burgenland free-range goose , of which there were also only a few stocks left, is now increasingly using the pastures again.

In 1996 the Lafnitz was named River of the Year .

history

For a long time the Lafnitz was the border river between Austria and Hungary. Today it forms the border between the federal states of Styria and Burgenland, which was only separated from western Hungary in 1921, over a long stretch. From 1760 onwards, Empress Maria Theresia had numerous boundary stones erected, some of which are still preserved. The meandering Lafnitz often changed its course at that time, which had previously repeatedly given rise to border disputes.
