Preliminary round
August 24, 1946
The preliminary round was held in four runs. The first three athletes per run - highlighted in light blue - qualified for the semi-finals.
The division and the mode of implementation of the preliminary runs are hardly comprehensible. In order to eliminate two of the fourteen runners who competed, four races were scheduled. For the first run, five athletes were assigned. Here two sprinters were eliminated, making the three upcoming races meaningless. The three participants each only had to reach the goal to be in the semi-finals. It was correspondingly slow there. The two athletes eliminated in the first run had the seventh and ninth fastest times. One explanation could be that there were short-term cancellations before the start. However, these are not noted in the sources.
