Preliminary round

2nd September 1966

The preliminary round was held in four runs. The first four athletes per run - highlighted in light blue - qualified for the semi-finals.

As in some other running competitions, the organizers made the preliminary races very strange. There were two runs with seven participants each, one run with eight participants. In the fourth race, only four athletes started, who only had to reach the finish in order to advance to the next lap, while in the other races three and four hurdles were eliminated twice.
