The Leine-Heide-Radweg is a long -distance cycle path in Germany, which runs with a total length of 410 km through the federal states of Thuringia , Lower Saxony and Hamburg . Until 2009 the cycle path was called Leine-Radweg and ended north of the confluence of the Leine in the Aller in Hodenhagen .

Brief description

The starting point of the long-distance cycle path is in Leinefelde (Thuringia), the end point is Hamburg. He leads u. a. via the following locations: Heiligenstadt , Göttingen , Northeim , Einbeck , Kreiensen , Freden (Leine) Alfeld , Gronau , Sarstedt , Hanover , Neustadt am Rübenberge , Schwarmstedt , Walsrode , Soltau , Schneverdingen and Buchholz in the Nordheide .

course

The Leine-Heide-Radweg begins at the Leinequelle near Leinefelde in Eichsfeld in Thuringia and ends in Ehestorf on the Hamburg border. It follows the course of the line , mostly at a distance of a few hundred meters, in some sections it also leads directly along the river. This means that the path has few inclines. After the Leine joins the Aller , the route follows the course of the Aller and then turns east at Ahlden . After crossing the Aller, the route runs through the Lüneburg Heath to Ehestorf on the Hamburg border. From here it is possible to follow the long-distance cycle route Hamburg – Bremen to Hamburg Central Station .

Landscape and landmarks

The Leine-Heide-Radweg connects the low mountain range of the Leinebergland with the Lüneburg Heath and the Hanseatic City of Hamburg.

Leinebergland and Leinetal

The path begins in the south at the Leinequelle near Leinefelde in Eichsfeld, Thuringia. Wooded ridges, orchards and smaller towns, some with historic buildings, characterize this thousand-year-old cultural landscape . The route through the slightly hilly river landscape crosses the former inner-German border at the Besenhausen manor and leads to the Friedland transit camp . About 20 km further north, the route reaches the university town of Göttingen with numerous sights. The plesse castle in Bovenden offers a wide view from the tower.

Behind the half-timbered town of Northeim , the Northeimer Seenplatte begins with the European bird sanctuary and the bird observation tower near Hollenstedt . Shortly afterwards, the trail reaches Salzderhelden with the Heldenburg . The nearby city center Einbeck has the marketplace numerous well-preserved and richly decorated half-timbered houses as Eick Ash House on a bicycle and Museum and the motorcycle - and car - Museum PS memory . Between Kreiensen and Freden (Leine) you pass the Erzhausen pumped storage power station and have a beautiful view of the Selter with its cliffs. The half-timbered towns of Alfeld and Gronau between the Seven Mountains are also on the way. In the Fagus factory in Alfeld, designed by Walter Gropius in the Bauhaus style, changing exhibitions can be visited. From the joint municipality of Freden (Leine) cycle paths lead to the cycle path of art and to Hildesheim . The wooded region near Hildesheim connects further north. Again, there are always views of the Leinetal.

A little further north, Marienburg Castle , built in the neo-Gothic style in the middle of the 19th century, is visible. The route then continues into the North German lowlands through the Leineaue to Hanover .

North German lowlands and Lüneburg Heath

The route continues past the Steinhuder Meer nature park and through the river landscape of the Aller-Leinetal, which is characterized by meadows, forests and moors. In Bothmer and Ahlden there are castles along the way. In the Lüneburg Heath, fields, meadows and small forest areas alternate with the heather areas typical of this landscape. The path passes Walsrode , Soltau and well-known heathlands such as Schneverdingen or Wilsede . The final destination of the route is the Hanseatic city of Hamburg. From Ehestorf at the state border to Hamburg, the otherwise good signage stops completely. For the last 19 km from Ehestorf to Hamburg Central Station, follow the Hamburg – Bremen long-distance cycle route .

Transport links

A railway line runs almost continuously along the entire route, more or less parallel to the route, so that access is possible in many places. Access to the path can also be easily reached by car.

Between Einbeck and Kreiensen the Leine-Heide-Radweg and the Europaradwanderweg R1 run several kilometers on the same route.

Nature of the path

The road surface changes more frequently between asphalt in different conditions, concrete slabs , sections paved with different materials and gravel , but also unpaved, sometimes sandy sections in fields and forests. Larger sections of the path are unsuitable for racing bikes . To the north and south of the urban area of ​​Hanover there are unpaved stretches of road that can only be driven at low speed on a dry road, provided that no mountain bikes are used, and are practically impassable by bike on wet roads.
