The village has over 600 buildings with around 4200 inhabitants, around two thirds of them directly in the village. This is also where the steel mill and the Kerpely colony are located . The local area also includes the Rotte Neuwerk right into the valley, the group of houses in the valley , that is the side valley of the Talbach , and parts of the scattered houses on the lowlands above the Talbach on the ridge Schillerhöhe - Galgenberg , the Riedl between Vordernberger Bach and Murtal in the south. history
The village, first mentioned in 1149 as Tunuize , was already settled in Roman times. The name goes back to the original Slavic * Tonevica (place at the pond / swamp). A grave chapel from the 3rd century is kept in the Graz State Museum Joanneum . The place has been shaped by the iron industry since the Middle Ages. As early as 1314, the place was named as an important trading center for iron , which was extracted from the ore of the Styrian Erzberg in numerous ironworks - called wheel works - in the Vordernbergertal . In 1436 an iron hammer is mentioned here. The upswing begins with the founding of Franzenshütte in 1837 by Franz Mayr , and the connection to the railway by means of the connecting line between the Südbahn and Kronprinz-Rudolfs-Bahn in 1868. In 1881 the Austrian Alpine Montangesellschaft (OAMG) was founded, to which the Hut Donawitz belonged - from this, together with other plants, VOEST emerged .
In 1938, when large communities were formed all over Austria after the Anschluss , the community of Donawitz also came to Leoben.
The place became world-famous through the Linz-Donawitz process for steel production from the 1950s, today two thirds of the world’s crude steel production is produced using this method. After the crisis of the Austrian and especially the Upper Styrian steel industry in the 1970s / 80s and the switch to special steels and products, Donawitz is once again a flourishing location. The Donawitz steel, rail and wire works , which today belongs to the Metal Engineering Division of the Voestalpine Group, is the largest manufacturer of railroad tracks in Europe.
