Lichnowsky is the name of a Silesian - Moravian noble family that has been documented since the 15th century.

History and origin

The family was originally called Woszczyki or von Woszczyce and came from the Pleß rule in Upper Silesia (probably after the village of Woszczyce near Orzesche ). Estepan de Woszyczyki was mentioned on a document dated March 17, 1377, in which Johann von Troppau confirmed the purchase of a Scholtisei in Lendzin . Hanuš (Johann) von Woszczyki, 1498–1507 Oberlandrichter of the principality Jägerndorf, received through his wife Sophie von Drahotuš, widow after Nikolaus von Ganzar, called Lichnowsky, then the village Lichten and from then on called himself Lichnowsky [Lignitz]. It was first mentioned in a document with this name on October 26, 1494.

Franz Bernhard von Lichnowsky was raised to the bohemian baron class in 1702 with the predicate noble lord von Woschtitz . His son of the same name was raised to the bohemian and imperial rank in 1721 . The secret council Friedrich Carl Johann Graf Lichnowsky received from the Prussian King Friedrich II. In 1773 the prince status inherited according to the birthright with the title of prince for the eldest son. With an Austrian recognition diploma from 1846, the Lichnowsky obtained the name and coat of arms association with the Moravian Counts of Werdenberg zu Namiest (they were descendants of Johann Baptist Verda von Verdenberg ) and have since called themselves "Prince Lichnowsky, Count of Werdenberg, Noble Lord of Woschtitz ". After a Prussian award in 1861, the prince was allowed to use the title of Highness .

coat of arms

The family coat of arms shows two single green grapevines on a red shield with violet fruits turned outwards . The two vines on a crowned stech helmet with a red and silver helmet cover serve as a helmet ornament .

The princely coat of arms Lichnowsky is split from the family coat of arms Lichnowsky (in red two single green grapevines with outwardly turned violet fruits) and the coat of arms of the Counts of Werdenberg zu Namiest ( four with a red heart shield , inside a three-lap silver church flag ; fields 1 and 4 show in gold a gold-reinforced black double-headed eagle , crowned in gold in the middle, fields 2 and 3 are divided three times by red and gold). On the main shield rest five helmets, the middle one with black and gold, the others with red and silver covers ; the first helmet wears the heraldic helmet ornament, the second a princely crown because of the dignity of the prince , the middle the double-headed eagle as in the shield, the fourth a miter (Count von Werdenberg), the fifth a silver dove with an olive branch in its beak (dove of peace ) on a laurel wreath ; Shield holders are two looking back, golden crowned golden lions, of which the rear one holds a silver church flag on a wooden pole; the lion standing on golden tendrils , intertwined with red banner , out in silver letters the slogan NON NOBIS DOMINE NON NOBIS Condensed (motto of the Knights Templar ; Psalm 115.1: Non nobis Domine, non nobis, sed nomini tuo da gloriam - Not us! , O Lord, not us, but your name give honor!); the whole thing stands under a prince's crown and a hermelin-lined purple coat of arms.
