history
Limbach was first mentioned in 1248. The manor was probably built as early as the first half of the 13th century. This was built as an agricultural farm and in 1459 was called the Vorwerk . Initially the owners were the Knights of Meckau. From 1538 the manor belonged to the von Schönberg family , who had the manor house rebuilt in 1570.
The founder of local knitting, Johann Esche , was born in 1682 in Köthensdorf , which like Limbach belonged to the Limbach manor. The industry, namely hosiery , was introduced by the descendants of Esche in the 18th century and accelerated the change from village to town. In 1795 Limbach was raised to a market town and in 1883 the place received city rights. Since the end of the 18th century, the manufacture of gloves in particular gained in importance, so that stocking knitting was soon pushed back. Nevertheless, the Limbach companies managed to maintain their leading position in the industry. This is reflected in the gold medal that the Rätzer company received at the 1904 World Exhibition in St. Louis . On April 6, 1869, the first "Technical School for Hosiery" was opened under the direction of Prof. Gustav Willkomm . To accommodate the workers, 68 houses were (later) built, the Helenenberg and Dorotheenberg.
In 1851 Limbach came to the royal Saxon court of Limbach as an accessory for the Limbach manor. Until 1856 Limbach belonged to the Electoral or Royal Saxon Office of Chemnitz . In 1856 Limbach became the seat of the Limbach court office . Since 1875 Limbach belonged to the administrative authority of Chemnitz . Limbach received city rights in 1883 . In 1912 the manor became the property of the city and has served as the town hall ever since.
By resolution of the SED , on July 1, 1950, the two cities of Limbach and Oberfrohna were merged with the district of Rußdorf to form the city of Limbach-Oberfrohna . Through the second district reform in the GDR , Limbach came as a district of the city of Limbach-Oberfrohna in 1952 to the Chemnitz-Land district in the Chemnitz district (renamed in 1953 to the Karl-Marx-Stadt-Land district and the Karl-Marx-Stadt district ) 1990 as the Saxon district of Chemnitz was continued. When it was dissolved, Limbach became part of the city of Limbach-Oberfrohna in 1994 and became part of the Chemnitzer Land district , which was added to the Zwickau district in 2008.
traffic
State roads 242 , 244 , 248 and 249 run through Limbach .
Since August 10, 1906, there has been a bus route via Burgstädt to Mittweida . The automotive omnibus Aktiengesellschaft Mittweida-Burgstädt-Limbach thus ran the first public bus line in the Kingdom of Saxony . This line still runs through Limbach, along with other bus routes.
The Limbach – Wittgensdorf railway was opened in 1872. The railway line to Wüstenbrand was added in 1897. A connection to Oberfrohna existed from 1913. The lines have now been closed.
As part of the Chemnitz model , Limbach-Oberfrohna is to be connected to the Chemnitz Stadtbahn via parts of the disused routes. The plans on the part of Limbach-Oberfrohna and Chemnitz provide for a possible route via KÄNDER, Chemnitz-Röhrsdorf and Chemnitz-Zentrum . In 2003 a majority of the city council favored a corresponding variant, the cost of which is estimated at 16 million euros. Construction wouldn't start before 2015. According to the current status, the completion of the route would be expected in 2020 at the earliest. The cost of the project is estimated at around 100 million euros, three quarters of which will be borne by the federal and state governments. The rest of the way would have to be done by the Central Saxony Transport Association . In July 2012 it became known that the German Regional Railway also wanted to examine the renewed railway operation between Oberfrohna and Kellers .
