List of honorary citizens of Bremerhaven

The city of Bremerhaven and its predecessor communities Lehe, Geestemünde and Wesermünde have given a total of 26 people honorary citizenship between 1885 and 2014 (as of 2014) , of which 23 honors are still valid.

During the period of National Socialism were otto telschow , Hermann Goering and Carl Röver been appointed honorary citizens of Wesermünde (Telschow also from Bremerhaven). These honors were revoked by a resolution of the city council on July 20, 1949.

The honorary citizens of the city of Bremerhaven

  1. Otto von Bismarck (born April 1, 1815 in Schönhausen; † July 30, 1898 in Friedrichsruh near Hamburg)

    The advancement of the Reich Chancellor is thanks to the expansion of the Bremerhaven area and the granting of funds for the establishment of new shipping lines.
  2. Karl Heinrich von Boetticher (born January 6, 1833 in Stettin; † March 6, 1907 in Naumburg an der Saale)
    Deputy of the Reich Chancellor
    Awarded in 1885
    Together with Heinrich von Stephan, Boetticher was the negotiator for the conclusion of the contract with North German Lloyd for the establishment of new shipping lines.
  3. Ernst Heinrich Wilhelm von Stephan (born January 7, 1831 in Stolp, † April 8, 1897 in Berlin)

    Stephan was together with Karl Heinrich von Boetticher negotiator for the conclusion of the contract with the North German Lloyd for the establishment of new shipping lines.
  4. Hermann Henrich Meier (born October 16, 1809: † November 17, 1898)

    Maier was the founder of Norddeutscher Lloyd . In Bremerhaven he set up liner connections with the shipping company to the United States and Australia.
  5. Georg Wilhelm Claussen (born January 23, 1845 - † June 19, 1919)

    As head of the Tecklenborg shipyard, Claussen introduced modern iron construction to shipbuilding.
  6. Georg Diedrich Seebeck
    Shipyard owner
    Awarded in 1920 in Geestemünde (* November 7, 1845 - † February 27, 1928)
    Seebeck is the founder of the shipyard named after him. A total of 468 ships were launched there until his death.
  7. Heinrich Kuhlmann (* May 24, 1855 - † February 17, 1922)

    Awarded in 1920
    Kuhlmann served as city councilor and city councilor for 24 years. The establishment of the slaughter and Viehof Bremerhaven-Lehe goes back to his initiative.

Because of his rich experience and his far-sighted view, which were of great benefit to the city of Lehe, he was honored with honorary citizenship at the last meeting of the magistrate after the merger of Lehe to form the city of Wesermünde.

    The expansion of the Speckenbütteler Park, which he looked after until the end of his life, is largely due to Timmermann.
  11. Johann Hinrich Schmalfeldt (November 28, 1850 - December 30, 1937),

    Awarded in 1930 (revoked on June 6, 1936 by the National Socialists, restored on July 20, 1949 by resolution of the city council)
    Schmalfeldt stood up for the social concerns of seafarers and the poor population in the Reichstag and later in the Bremen citizenship.

    Lührs served from 1919 to 1930 in Geestemünde and Wesermünde as an honorary senator. He was a co-founder of the non-profit building association Geestemünde-Süd.

    He was awarded honorary citizenship as an expression of the city's gratitude for his meritorious work for the benefit of mankind and as a token of the gratitude and love that he has always preserved for his hometown.
  14. Wilhelm Kaisen (born May 22, 1887 in Hamburg, † December 19, 1979 in Bremen)

    The award honored Kaisen's great services in overcoming the devastating effects of the war and the development of new life in the city.

    After the end of the war, Heukelum worked to alleviate the hardship and rebuild the city. He was a staunch supporter of the connection of Wesermünde to the state of Bremen.

    His sustained commitment to strengthening the city as a center of German polar research with the establishment of the Alfred Wegener Institute for Polar and Marine Research was recognized with the award of honorary citizenship.
