List of specially protected caves in Salzburg

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

A specially protected cave is a protection category from the Salzburg Cave Act (§ 5). The protection category comprises 20 caves or cave systems.

Basics

In Salzburg , the Cave Act basically prohibits any measure that could lead to the destruction or impairment of a cave , parts or contents thereof, including its immediate surroundings (Section 4). In addition, caves or parts of caves that “are particularly worthy of preservation because of their peculiarity, their special character, their natural scientific importance or for special ecological reasons including their immediate surroundings” can be placed under special protection by a decision of the state government . The notification must contain the special protection purpose and must be sent to the landowners affected and other real entitled persons and be posted on the official notice board of the authority for four weeks.

When the notification is issued, protective effects come into force that prohibit interventions that contradict the specified protective purpose. The state government can only approve exceptions if it is ensured that neither the individual character, the special character, the special scientific significance nor the natural phenomena that characterize the nature of the cave are significantly impaired or destroyed by the intended measures. In the specially protected caves, a special permit from the state government is generally required for any entry. Exceptions exist only for cave research and cave rescue .
