geography
The Lohmühle Goch was located on Mühlendamm, on the Niers, in the town of Goch, Kleve district , in North Rhine-Westphalia . The Susmühle was located above and the Goch Kornmühle below .
The Niers has a height of approx. 17 m above sea level here . The care and maintenance of the water is the responsibility of the Niersverband , which is based in Viersen .
history
With the settlement and the first mention of the city of Goch in 1261, an economic basis for the construction of water mills developed on the Niersbogen and Stadtgraben. The location was so excellent that five mills could use the water power of the Niers over a short distance . In the so-called Mühlenviertel the Mühlentor these were the oil mill Goch , Walkmühle Goch , grain mill Goch, Goch Lohmühle and somewhat removed and later the Susmühle.
In the Gocher Schöffenbriefe of 1272 and 1275, the existence of a mill was communicated in which a Gerhardus molendarius - Müller Gerhard was named. In 1362 the Graefenthal abbess Isabel von Geldern - a sister of the duke - gave the mills she had left for use to the city of Goch. With the consent of the duke, in 1367 this became a leasehold , which, if necessary, was linked to the right to enable the construction of further wind and water mills. In addition to the existing water mills, windmills were also built , which, due to seasonal restrictions with regard to the Nierswiesen, became more and more important.
The Lohmühle was built in 1523 by the Gocher Schumachergilde, on Mühlendamm, on their own account. The guild collected the grinding fees until the construction costs were paid. They also received the monopoly for trade with leather products in the city. After the construction costs had been paid off, the town of Goch became the owner , with the obligation to only charge low fees for reasons of economy . In the 18th century the right to use the mill was granted on a long lease . The preferences agreed upon with it caused constant trouble between the guild and the tenant . Perhaps this was the reason for the end of the Lohmühle at the end of the 18th century.
