Long Island, like the other islands in Casco Bay, was settled by European settlers in the 17th century. Before that, Indians from the Abenaki tribe lived there . Colonel Ezekiel Cushing bought the island in 1732, making him the first known settler to settle on Long Island. After his death in 1765 he bequeathed the island to his nine children. Soon after, other settlers came to the island. During the Second World War, Long Island served as a tank farm for the US Navy . Supply stations and army buildings were built on the island. Many of these buildings still stand on the island.

When the town of Portland, to which Long Island belonged, tripled the fees and taxes on Long Island in the early 1990s, the residents decided to make themselves independent of Portland. The Town of Long Island was established on July 1, 1993.
