Ludwig Vierthaler

Ludwig Vierthaler (born January 16, 1875 in Munich , † March 4, 1967 in Hanover ; full name Ludwig Karl Maria Vierthaler ) was a German sculptor who was one of the most important Hanoverian artists of the 20th century.

Life

After studying at the Munich School of Applied Arts , Vierthaler initially worked as a small sculptor in Bruno Paul’s studio in Berlin. In 1915 he took up a job at the Hanover School of Crafts and Applied Arts . From 1920 he was also a lecturer at the Technical University of Hanover . In 1921 he became a member of the Hanover Art Association and on July 31, 1922 he was appointed honorary professor. Since the 1930s his studio has been in Friedrich Kaulbach's villa on Waterloostrasse.

In 1945 Vierthaler initiated the establishment of the Association of Visual Artists for Northern Germany , of which he was first chairman until 1953.

He organized the first North German art exhibition after the war, which took place in 1946 in the Herrenhausen Gardens in Hanover.

Ludwig Vierthaler was buried in the Engesohde city cemetery .

Ludwig Vierthaler had his craft designs , for example for various types of candlesticks , lamps and flower bowls , produced in the 1920s, especially in Metallkunst Herrenhausen (from 1923: Metallkunst Aktiengesellschaft Hannover ), for example

  • around 1920: octagonal ceiling lamp in pyramid shape with relief-like ornaments on the metal edge;
  • around 1921:
    • Cast brass chandelier with the monogram "LV", faceted base, shaft as an expressive representation of an Art Deco figure , carrying three arms with candle sleeves , height 39.5 cm
    • Flower bowl with three male, kneeling bearer figures as feet
