Luis Antonio Gokim "Chito" Cardinal Tagle (born June 21, 1957 in Manila , Philippines ) is a Filipino clergyman and was Roman Catholic Archbishop of Manila from 2011 to 2019 . Since 2019 he has been the Cardinal Prefect of the Congregation for the Evangelization of Peoples .

Luis Antonio Tagle, whose maternal grandfather came from China, attended the Saint Andrew School in Parañaque . He then studied philosophy at the San José Seminary in Manila and Catholic theology at the Ateneo de Manila University . He was ordained a deacon on July 18, 1981. On February 27, 1982 Tagle received the sacrament of ordination for the diocese of Imus through Bishop Felix Paz Perez .

From 1982 to 1983 Luis Antonio Tagle was vicar in the parish of St. Augustine and spiritual at the seminary in Imus . Subsequently, he was the rain of the Imus seminary. From 1987 to 1991 Tagle completed a doctoral degree at the Catholic University of America . In 1991 he was summa cum laude for a doctor of theology doctorate . At the Paul VI Institute Luis Antonio Tagle took some courses. From 1993 to 1995 he was Episcopal Vicar for religious . In 1998 Tagle became pastor of Our Lady of The Pillar Cathedral in Imus. In addition, he became a member of the College of Consultors , the Council of Priests, and the Doctrine of the Faith Commission . In 1997 Luis Antonio Tagle became a member of the International Theological Commission .

On October 22, 2001, Pope John Paul II appointed him Bishop of Imus. He was ordained bishop on December 12, 2001 by the Archbishop of Manila, Jaime Lachica Cardinal Sin ; Co- consecrators were the bishop emeritus of Imus, Manuel Sobreviñas , and the Vicar Apostolic of Palawan , Pedro Arigo . Tagle chose the motto Dominus Est! (“It is the Lord!”), Which comes from the Gospel according to John ( Joh 21,7 EU ).

On October 13, 2011, Pope Benedict XVI appointed him . to the Archbishop of Manila and thus (de facto) to the Primate of the Philippines. The inauguration took place on December 12 of the same year. On October 24, 2012, Benedict XVI. known his appointment as cardinal . In the consistory of November 24, 2012, he accepted him as a cardinal priest with the titular church of San Felice da Cantalice a Centocelle in the college of cardinals .

Luis Antonio Tagle is a member of the Doctrine of the Faith Commission of the Philippine Bishops' Conference .

Tagle attended the 2013 conclave . At 55, he was the second youngest participant after Cardinal Isaac Cleemis Thottunkal (53). Cardinal Tagle has been President of Caritas Internationalis , the umbrella organization for Caritas associations worldwide, since May 2015 .

On December 8, 2019, Cardinal Luis Antonio Tagle was appointed Cardinal Prefect of the Congregation for the Evangelization of Peoples by Pope Francis ; he succeeds Fernando Cardinal Filoni , who was appointed Cardinal Grand Master of the Order of the Holy Sepulcher in Jerusalem. Pope Francis elevated him to Cardinal Bishop with effect from May 1, 2020 while retaining his titular church .

Order of Knights of the Holy Sepulcher in Jerusalem

Luis Antonio Tagle was inducted into the Knightly Order of the Holy Sepulcher in Jerusalem as Bishop of Imus on September 2, 2010 . He has been Grand Prior of the Lieutenancy for the Philippines since 2011 and in 2012 he was appointed Grand Crusader by Cardinal Grand Master Edwin Frederick O'Brien .
