The former MCL Bremen is a multi - purpose freighter built in China in 2010 . The ship was attacked by Somali pirates in November 2010 on its journey from the Far East to Europe in the Indian Ocean .

history

The ship, which was ordered on April 16, 2008, was shipped under the construction number DF80-1 as the first of eight structurally identical ships, four of which went to the Schepers shipping company in Haren (Ems) and four to the Concord Shipping company in Jork, at the Chinese shipyard Zhejiang Dongfang Shipbuilding built. The keel of the ship was laid on March 2, 2009, and the launch took place on April 3, 2010. The ship was completed on October 23, 2010.

The ship was launched as MCL Bremen under the flag of Antigua and Barbuda . It was managed by Scheper's ship management in Haren (Ems). In May 2012 the ship was renamed Bremen .

In 2015 the ship was sold to the shipping company Briese Schiffahrt based in Leer . Briese Schiffahrt brought the ship under the German flag. The new name of the ship was BBC Lima .

Pirate attack in November 2010

On the morning of November 26, 2010 at 10 am, a group of seized Somali pirates , the motor vessel in the Indian Ocean outside of the framework of the EU mission Operation Atalanta monitored area, about 1,000 miles east of the Horn of Africa and 270 nautical miles west of the Maldives on its Maiden voyage . The ship was on its way from Wenzhou to Moerdijk .

The German captain, three Ukrainians , one Russian and seven Filipinos were on board the MCL Bremen . At the beginning of the attack, the team holed up in a specially secured room. The pirates' base was the tanker Polar , which was captured 1000 km east of Socotra and sailing under the flag of Panama on October 30, 2010 . After several hours of pursuit, two speedboats were launched from this tanker and headed for the MCL Bremen at around 20 to 25 knots . There were eight pirates on board each speedboat. The railing of the MCL Bremen was secured all around with NATO wire as climbing protection. The pirates, who mostly only carried grappling hooks with them during their earlier capture , overcame the barrier with aluminum ladders that were around seven to eight meters long. The attackers destroyed all the doors they could not enter with gunfire. They took away the cash that could be found and the clothing of the crew members.

The crew was able to steer the ship from the shelter. The captain was able to sail the MCL Bremen towards the Danish command and support ship HDMS Esbern Snare , which serves as the flagship of the NATO task force SNMG 1 and which had taken on the task of liberating the MCL Bremen . The raid lasted about four hours. When a boarding team from Esbern Snare took over the MCL Bremen and the crew came out of the shelter, the pirates had already left the ship. The ship was able to continue its voyage towards the Suez Canal .

Technical specifications

The ship is propelled by a nine-cylinder four - stroke diesel engine from the manufacturer Caterpillar (type: MaK 9M25C) with an output of 2,990  kW . The motor acts on a controllable pitch propeller via a reduction gear . A shaft generator with 750  kVA apparent power and two generators driven by Scania diesel engines with 377 kW each with 425 kVA apparent power are available for the power supply. An emergency generator with 240 kVA apparent power was also installed.

The ship is equipped with an electrically powered bow thruster with an output of 409 kW. The hull is reinforced with ice ( ice class E3).

The ship has a continuous hold with a hatch. The box-shaped cargo space tapers towards the front. The hold is closed with folding hatch covers. It is 87.03 m long, 12.80 m wide and 11.40 m high. The capacity of the room is 12,180 m³.

The cargo space is equipped with an intermediate deck that can be hung at two heights - 5.95 m and 7.95 m respectively - and can thus divide the space into two heights. The intermediate deck can also act as two bulkheads and divide the cargo space vertically. The bulkheads can be set up in five positions. There are 2,179 m² available on the tank roof and 1,133 m² on the hatch covers. The tank ceiling can be loaded with 15 t / m², the intermediate deck with 3 t / m² and the hatch cover with 1.75 t / m².

The ship is equipped with two NMF - ship cranes equipped with 80 t capacity, which is on the port side are of the vessel. The cranes can be driven in combination and then lift 160 t.

The shipping companies Schepers and Briese Schiffahrt indicate the loading capacities of the ship differently. The shipping company Schepers described the ship with a deadweight of 7950 dwt. The container capacity was given as 444  TEU or 315 TEU with a homogeneous load with 14 t heavy containers . Briese Schiffahrt describes the ship as having a dead weight of 7,843 dwt. The container capacity is given as 511 TEU or 320 TEU with homogeneous loading with 14 t containers. There is space for 244 TEU in the hold and 267 TEU on deck. There is space for five containers side by side in the room and six on deck. Three layers on top of each other can be loaded on deck. 30 connections are available on deck for refrigerated containers. The weight of a container stack must not exceed 67 t in the room. On deck, the weight is limited to 40 t for 20-foot containers and 55 t for 40-foot containers.

The deck superstructures are located in the rear of the ship.
