The MLS is Back Tournament (original name: MLS is Back Tournament ) was a tournament within the 2020 season of Major League Soccer . It opened on July 8, 2020 with the game Orlando City against Inter Miami and ended with the final on August 11, 2020, which was won by the Portland Timbers . Afterwards the regular game operation of the MLS was continued.

The background was the COVID-19 pandemic and its effects. Because of this, the Champion Stadium , which is part of the ESPN Wide World of Sports Complex in the Disney World Resort near Orlando , Florida , was selected as the only venue . In this all games took place as ghost games .

mode

The 26 teams were divided into groups of six and five groups of four on June 10, 2020. Within the groups, similar to competitions such as the World or European Championships , a simple round of points without second legs was played out. Each team played once against each group opponent, so that in the end all teams had played three games each.

The two best teams in each group made it to the round of 16 and, after two teams were eliminated early, the four best thirds in the group. The tournament winner received a starting place for the CONCACAF Champions League 2021 as well as prize money of 1.1 million US dollars , all performances from the group phase were also transferred to the overall table and the respective conference rankings for the 2020 season. The group draw took place on June 10th, which also stipulated that Orlando City and Inter Miami played the opening game on July 8th.

After FC Dallas withdrew from participation shortly before the start of the tournament due to several internal COVID-19 cases, Nashville SC followed suit shortly after the tournament started for the same reason. As a result, Chicago Fire was transferred to group B, so that all groups had four participants each.
