The fourth MTV Video Music Awards Latinoamerica was originally scheduled to be presented on October 20, 2005 at the Teatro Gran Tlachco in Xcaret , Playa del Carmen , Mexico . It was to be the first event to take place outside of Miami , Florida , and therefore the first to actually take place in Latin America . But as Hurricane Wilma was approaching the Mexican coast, the event was rescheduled for an earlier date on October 19. Since the danger still existed, however, a much later date was targeted on December 22nd.
However, MTV decided to change because they felt the effort was too great and canceled the award entirely from the program. Instead, the Lenguas were on 22 December as part of the half-hour specials Por Fin Los Premios MTV 2005 awarded where the winner only in the style of the format Punk'd were ridiculed, and then receive their award. The band Molotov , who would also have acted as moderators for the actual show, took on the moderation . The band also played a public concert in Playa del Carmen. On the same day, a special called Lenguas en Vivo: Ganadores en Concierto with live performances by the participating artists was broadcast. Another one and a half hour special called El Show que Wilma se Voló showed the original plans for the award.
The singer Shakira received four awards, and with six nominations she also topped the nomination list.
