Marcel Fischer (fencer)

Marcel Fischer (born August 14, 1978 in Biel / Bienne ) is a former Swiss fencer .

Career

He is 190 cm tall and weighs 80 kg. Fischer grew up in Brügg near Biel and lives in Basel . He studied medicine at the University of Basel and graduated in November 2006. After completing his dissertation, he mainly prepared for the 2008 Summer Olympics in Beijing , for which he was unable to qualify. At the 2004 Summer Olympics in Athens , he became Olympic champion in epee fencing . He defeated the Chinese Wang Lei 15: 9 in the final . Fischer finished second in the overall World Cup in 2003 and 2004 and came fourth at the 2000 Summer Olympics in Sydney . He was a member of the Fechtgesellschaft Basel . He learned fencing at the Biel Fencing Club , whose fencing master at the time was Ryszard Marszałek . The Polish school of Marszałek was more defensive, which is reflected in Fischer's fencing style. His last coaches were the Germans Rolf Kalich (former national coach) and Manfred Beckmann (club coach). In 2004 he received the SwissAward in the sport category for his successes .

On November 13, 2008, he gave a press conference in the hall of the Biel fencing club, in which he announced that he would withdraw from top-class sport: "It is a special moment to stop here where it all began".

He works as an orthopedist and lives with his partner and daughter in Scherzingen . In 2011 he developed cancer and the malignant tumor was surgically removed.
