Marcel Senn

Marcel Senn (born March 26, 1954 in Thun ) is a Swiss legal historian and legal philosopher and has been a full professor of legal history , contemporary legal history and legal philosophy at the University of Zurich since 1998 .

Life

Marcel Senn studied law at the University of Zurich and received his doctorate in 1982. For his dissertation «Legal-historical self-understanding in transition. A contribution to the theory of science and the history of science in legal history » he received the Professor Walther Hug Prize in 1983 . From 1982 to 1995 he worked in various positions in the practice. With his work «Spinoza and the German jurisprudence. A historical study on the reception deficit of Spinozism in the law of the German-speaking cultural area »He completed his habilitation in 1991 at the University of Zurich, where he initially taught as a private lecturer and since 1995 as an associate professor and since 1998 as a full professor.

Marcel Senn's research focuses on the Enlightenment philosophy, natural law in legal thought (Spinoza, Thomasius, Wolff, Kant, Hegel), naturalism in law (19th / 20th centuries) and city rights in the late Middle Ages. Another research interest concerns the history of science, legal history and legal and social philosophy.

From 2008 to 2010 Marcel Senn was Dean of the Law Faculty of the University of Zurich. As President of the Swiss Association for Legal and Social Philosophy, from 2005 to 2009 he held congresses on the subjects of “Brain Research and Legal Responsibility” , “Jurisprudence as Cultural Studies?”, “Jurisprudence and Hermeneutics” and “Law and Globalization” .

Marcel Senn has been a member of the Board of Trustees of the Legal Sources Foundation of the Swiss Lawyers Association, which also publishes the collection of Swiss legal sources online, since 2006 .

In 2016 his work “Legal and Social Philosophy. Historical Foundations of European, North American, Indian and Chinese Legal and Social Philosophy ” (1st edition) was translated into the Chinese language and his work « Legal history - a cultural-historical outline » (4th edition) was translated into Russian.
