Marik Aaron Roeder (* 14. August 1989 in Berlin-Spandau ) is a German YouTube - animation artist , author and owner of the YouTube channel darkviktory . He gained fame primarily through the animation series TubeClash , which has won the German Web Video Prize several times . His animated and at the same time editorially supervised news magazine BrainFed - Feed your brain! was awarded the Grimme Online Award .

Life

Marik Roeder was born in Berlin-Spandau, his mother is a horse manager , his father an arborist . He has a younger brother. When he started third grade, the family moved to Fliederhorst near Friesack in Havelland , where he attended the Friedrich Ludwig Jahn grammar school in Kyritz . At the age of 16 he did an internship at the municipal working group Tolerantes Brandenburg (katte e.V.) in Potsdam and discovered, among other things, his enthusiasm for the city of Potsdam, where he lived until 2017. In 2009 he graduated from high school. In 2011 he began training as a media designer for image and sound at Film und Video Untertitelung GmbH in Potsdam-Babelsberg. At that time, however, he was already active on YouTube. This soon became more important to him, so he broke off his training in 2013 to work as a freelance animation artist.

In 2006 Roeder published the novel Vertraute Dir… , which largely reflects his own life situation at the time. At 15, Roeder fell in love with his closest friend and came out differently than him. This relationship meant an eternal game of hide and seek with his lover with no chance of a life together. In the novel, Roeder describes the life of 16-year-old punk Ben in simple words . Ben lives in constant fear of right-wing extremist gangs, his best friend takes her own life and he also falls in love with his best friend. Since Ben does not manage to seriously deal with his feelings and he does not receive any support from outside during this difficult time of sadness and loneliness, he tries to give the pain an outlet by self-harm. Since 2008, Roeder has published further lyrics, poems and short stories on his blog The Melancholy of darkviktory .

In 2008 Roeder created the manga- style picture series Coming Out in Dallow , which shows a love story in which two boys take different paths to their coming out and in the end find each other and fall in love. The large-format pictures were put together for a traveling exhibition. The first place of the exhibition was in April 2008 the Landtag Brandenburg , where the AIDS-Hilfe Lausitz organized an exhibition at the invitation of the SPD parliamentary group. The exhibition taking place on the occasion of the Christopher Street Day in Potsdam was opened by the Brandenburg Minister for Labor, Social Affairs, Health and Family Dagmar Ziegler . Further stations of the exhibition were the closing event of the Christopher Street Day Cottbus, the ver.di federal administration and in 2013 the Göttingen town hall. The exhibition was awarded the second prize in the creative competition "Schimpfwort Schwule Sau" of the gay anti-violence project Maneo of the Berlin Mann-O-Meter .

In 2010, Roeder took part in a film project by the theater group “Bühnenreif”, a project by the Berlin-Brandenburg rural youth. He plays the role of the organic farmer Holger in the rural crime thriller Nur das Rabbit Was Witness , which is funded by the European Social Fund .

In 2011, as part of the Brandenburg-wide graffiti competition "208 Meter Tolerance", he designed the fence of the new Brandenburg state parliament in the city center with a gay coming-out story.

YouTube career

Roeder's YouTube channel darkviktory is named after the maxi series Batman: Dark Victory by Jeph Loeb and the illustrator Tim Sale , which was published in November 1999 . At the beginning of his YouTube career in 2006 he was part of the so-called fan - dubber scene. In this scene, fans mostly take Japanese animes , recreate their international soundtrack , translate the dialogues and create a German-language synchronization, which is then uploaded back to YouTube. He was also active on various other channels, for example on the GermanWildcats channel founded in 2008 . On GermanWildcats he dubbed the entire film High School Musical 2 and the beginning of the film High School Musical 3: Senior Year new with two other YouTubers . These videos are called Not Another High School Musical Parody . Since the fandubbers did not have the rights to distribute the images, the YouTube channel was blocked. For the same reasons, Roeder's channel darkviktory was closed in October 2009. Thereupon he created the new channel darkvikt0ry with the number “0” instead of the “o”. In order to avoid further bans, Roeder began to draw and synchronize the animations for this channel himself. These own animations, which he called animariks , gave him more artistic freedom, as he could now bring his own humor and gay characters into the animations. One of the first animariks was the six-part series Death Note , in which the two main characters Light Yagami and L are homosexual. These animariks are based on the story Death Note by Tsugumi Ōba and the illustrator Takeshi Obata . Through his speaking experience on YouTube, he also got some commercial radio play roles and voiceovers for television productions.

After the phone numbers were swapped during the vote in the eighth season of Deutschland sucht den Superstar , Roeder published an animated parody of the show on his channel in which he questions the credibility of the vote. In this parody, the character of the couchman appears for the first time, commenting on what is happening in the parody from the viewer's perspective on the sofa. Due to the great success of this DSDS parody, further parodies of the DSDS seasons from 2012, 2013 and 2014 and also from other TV programs such as Das Supertalent or Ich bin ein Star - Get me out of here! . The parody of the final episode of the ninth season of Deutschland sucht den Superstar was nominated in 2013 for the German Web Video Prize in the LOL category. The parodies of the jungle camp were also shown on the joiz TV channel in Germany and Switzerland in 2014 .

Roeder is represented in the jury of the Your Turn video competition, which will run for the second time from February to April 2016 . The competition is organized by his network Endemol beyond , funded by Medienboard Berlin-Brandenburg and sponsored by Google Ireland. The competition supports the five creative talents in the field of online video who have submitted a contribution on the topic of the Berlin-Brandenburg capital region with a total of 70,000 euros.

Roeder's animations can also be found on other YouTube channels: at irregular intervals he publishes guest articles for the online magazine Fernsehkritik-TV and the online portal Massengeschmack-TV. Since June 2017 he has been part of the collaboration channel KidsVonDamals , which deals with the topics of Disney and childhood nostalgia . Roeder also operates other channels on YouTube: TheDVlogic for vlogs , darkviktoryDub for songs and fandubs and darkviktoryWithoutC for English-language content. His channel darkvikt0ry reached the mark of 100,000 subscribers in August 2014, and in November 2015 it reached 500,000 subscribers.

BrainFed

BrainFed - feed your brain! was an animated news magazine that was published every two weeks between July 2014 and May 2017. In the animation videos, darkviktory took up current issues from politics and society and prepared them for a young audience. The episodes were a little shorter than other news formats on YouTube at around 2:30 to 4 minutes. The topics were researched by an editorial team headed by Franzi von Kempis, the texts were written and spoken by Roeder. Numbers, facts and messages were made easier to understand and more memorable through the animated depictions by Roeder and Alican Kuzu. The reach was around 100,000 views per video. From January 2015 there was also the additional format BrainFed-Nachschlag , in which one topic was dealt with in depth with background information. BrainFed Lookup was produced in the whiteboard style. BrainFed was produced by the media initiative Du hast die Macht and funded by the Federal Agency for Civic Education . On June 24, 2016, BrainFed received the audience award of the Grimme Online Award .

TubeClash

Team TubeClash at the 2015 web video award ceremony: Alican Eren Kuzu, Nina Benz, Marik Roeder, Dennis Kostas Weiß

TubeClash was a three-season animation series in which ten YouTubers competed against each other in two groups ("clashes") on an island. The seasons appeared annually, the episodes within a season are published weekly. The series was inspired by the jungle camp , in contrast to this, however, at TubeClash the viewers had a say in the selection of participants and the course of the plot. The first season took place in a tropical rainforest reminiscent of the Hunger Games , the second season took place in a post-apocalyptic city related to The Maze Runner . In the run-up to a season, viewers could choose their favorites from a list of 20 YouTubers, but Roeder made the final selection. During the season, viewers could then use their comments to influence the course of the plot and vote for their favorites. In order to be able to incorporate the comments of the viewers into the episodes and to be able to take into account the voting results, Roeder created the final script for the next episode only after the publication of the previous episode, followed by animation and synchronization. The ten episodes of the first season were published from August to October 2014, the ten episodes of the second season from November 2015 to January 2016. The ten episodes of the third season FinalClash were published between November 2016 and February 2017.

TubeClash was Roeder's first animation project that was not produced by him alone. Six people were involved in the production of the first season, and twelve people worked on the second season. Roeder obtained the necessary financing via the crowdfunding platform Startnext . During the crowdfunding for the second season in August 2015, there was an incident in which a person made uncovered commitments via the crowdfunding platform, so that the intended funding target was quickly exceeded and the willingness of others to support the project with money decreased. Nevertheless, over 900 supporters were able to reach 38,000 euros for the second season with a specified funding target of 25,000 euros. In crowdfunding for the first season from March to June 2014, 180 supporters reached 8,000 euros with a specified funding target of 3,000 euros, including prominent supporters such as Gronkh . Further costs of the project were covered by sponsoring.

The financing of the third and final season of FinalClash was initially in jeopardy when Roeder's multi-channel network Endemol Shine beyond announced that it would cease operations at the end of July 2016. For example, Endemol took care of the entire evaluation and distribution of TubeClash for Roeder. FinalClash is now being played out as a format on funk , the online media offering from ARD and ZDF . FinalClash was produced by Roeder and gatzke.media by Daniel Gatzke (SceneTakeTV); there was no crowdfunding. At the Videodays Cologne 2016, Roeder announced the start of the season for November 25, 2016, so that the very last episode TubeClash came online on YouTube on February 10, 2017. During the three years The Making (initially behind the scenes ) and Creator's Commentary for the current episodes were also uploaded.

Broadcast My Ass

On November 1, 2019, Roeder published the first episode of the animated series Broadcast My Ass , which is published on the YouTube channel of the same name and financed by funk . It revolves around the boy Timmy, who wants to become a successful YouTuber and receives the support of his best friend Stein as a cameraman and the new one in the village, Lana, who has a hard time making connections in school and village life because she is the only one from town. The classmates try to prevent the three of them from their project and success on YouTube. The title is inspired by the YouTube slogan "Broadcast Yourself" and parodies the online dependency and needs of Generation Z , as well as pop and net culture in a satirical way .
