Martin Krebs (bishop)

Martin Krebs (born November 2, 1956 in Essen ) is a German clergyman, diplomat of the Holy See and archbishop of the Roman Catholic Church .

Life

After graduating from the Episcopal Gymnasium at Stoppenberg in Essen, Martin Krebs first studied Catholic theology and philosophy at the Ruhr University in Bochum as a diocesan theologian of the Episcopal College of the Diocese of Essen . After the first theological exam ( Philosophicum ) he continued his studies at the Pontifical Gregorian University as a seminarist at the Pontificium Collegium Germanicum et Hungaricum de Urbe in Rome . On October 10, 1983, in Rome , he received the sacrament of ordination for his home diocese of Essen from the Archbishop of Munich and Freising and later Cardinal , Friedrich Wetter . After graduating from the Pontifical Gregorian University, he worked from 1984 to 1987 as a chaplain in the parish of St. Joseph in Duisburg-Mitte . In October 1987, Martin Krebs began studying at the Pontifical Diplomatic Academy in Rome, which he completed in 1991 with a doctorate in canon law (Dr. iur. Can.).

In July 1991, Krebs became secretary of the Apostolic Nunciature in Burundi . In the following years he worked in the nunciatures in Japan (1995–1998), Austria (1998–1999) and the Czech Republic (1999–2002); from 2002 to 2006 he was employed at the Representation of the Holy See to the European Union in Brussels . Since 2006 he has been a Nunciature Councilor in Washington, DC , USA .

Pope John Paul II awarded him the honorary title of Chaplain of His Holiness in 1992 and the title of Honorary Prelate of His Holiness in 2002 .

On September 8th, 2008 Pope Benedict XVI appointed him . the Titular Archbishop of Taborenta and ordered him to apostolic nuncio in Guinea and Mali . The episcopal ordination received his Cardinal Secretary of State Tarcisio Bertone SDB on 16 November 2008 at the Essen Cathedral ; Co- consecrators were the retired Apostolic Nuncio, Archbishop Erwin Josef Ender , and the Essen Bishop Felix Genn , who a few days later, on November 26th, appointed him Dome of Honor at the High Cathedral. Krebs' motto is: Beati misericordes ("Blessed the Merciful") and comes from the Beatitudes from the Gospel according to Matthew ( Mt 5,7  EU ).

On May 8, 2013, Pope Francis appointed him Apostolic Nuncio in New Zealand , the Cook Islands , Kiribati , Palau and the Federated States of Micronesia, and Apostolic Delegate for the Pacific Ocean . On September 23 of the same year he was also appointed Apostolic Nuncio to Fiji , Samoa and Vanuatu . On January 18, 2014, Pope Francis also appointed him Apostolic Nuncio to Tonga . Pope Francis decreed a further extension of his area of ​​responsibility on May 3, 2014 with Krebs' appointment as Apostolic Nuncio to the Marshall Islands and Nauru .

On June 16, 2018, Pope Francis appointed him Apostolic Nuncio in Uruguay .

In addition to German, he also speaks English, Italian, French, Spanish and Czech.
