Martín Palermo (born November 7, 1973 in La Plata ) is a former Argentine soccer player who last played for Boca Juniors .

Player career

Palermo started his professional career at Estudiantes de La Plata . Here he made his professional debut on July 5, 1992 in the 0-0 draw against San Lorenzo and played for the club until 1997 before moving to league rivals Boca Juniors . Here he finally made the breakthrough through his goal hazard and a high hit rate. In 1998 he was the top scorer in the Apertura with 20 goals in 19 games and in the same year South American Footballer of the Year . A cruciate ligament rupture suffered in November 1999 prevented an almost perfect move to Italy to Lazio Rome . On May 24, 2000 he made his comeback in the quarterfinal match of the Copa Libertadores . He managed the decisive goal to 3-0 against CA River Plate after the first leg had been lost 2-1.

On November 28, 2000, Palermo caught the attention of Spanish football clubs: In the final of the World Cup , he scored two goals, which led Boca Juniors to a 2-1 win over Real Madrid and thus the title. He was then voted Player of the Game.

During the winter break, Palermo's stay in Europe began, but it was not fortunate. First he was signed by Villarreal FC . On November 20, 2001, he climbed a wall after scoring a goal, but it fell over under pressure from Villarreal fans. He broke both his shin and fibula and was out for two months. In August 2003 he was deported to Betis Sevilla because he no longer played a role in the plans of coach Benito Floro . But here he couldn't convince and was handed over to Deportivo Alavés during the winter break .

In the summer of 2004, Palermo ended his unsuccessful stay in Europe and returned to Argentina to the Boca Juniors . Here he found his scoring threat again and is now the best goalscorer in the club's history with 222 goals. He ended his career after the 2010/2011 season.

National team

Palermo also played "only" 15 internationals for Argentina . He got nine goals. After ten years of abstinence from the Argentine national team, he was called up by the new national coach Diego Maradona and scored two goals in the international match against Ghana (on September 30, 2009) to win Argentina 2-0. On October 10, 2009, Palermo scored the decisive goal in stoppage time in the World Cup qualifier against Peru to make it 2-1, thus saving the Argentines' chance of qualifying. After the game, coach Maradona spoke of “holy Palermo”, which would have given the Argentines a second life.

In the last group game of the World Cup in 2010 , he scored the 2-0 final score against Greece after being substituted on.

From November 2012 to December 2013 he coached Mendoza's only professional club , CD Godoy Cruz .
