Martina Moravcová (born January 16, 1976 in Piešťany ) is a former Slovak swimmer .

Career

Moravcová is the most successful swimmer in her country's swimming history. She swims from 50m to 200m in freestyle and butterfly styles . She played her first major international competition in 1992 at the Olympic Games in Barcelona for the Czechoslovak team . However, she did not get beyond the preliminary stages. However, in the following year at the European Swimming Championships in Sheffield in 1993 , she won her first international medal: silver in the 100 m freestyle.

In 1996 she came to the Olympic Games in Atlanta with higher expectations , but they were disappointed because her best placement was a 9th place in the 200m freestyle. A year later at the European Swimming Championships in Seville in 1997 , she finally made her final international breakthrough. She won three silver medals in the 100 m butterfly, 100 m freestyle and over 200 m medley . She was fourth in the 200 m freestyle.

At the 1998 World Swimming Championships in Perth , Australia , she won two silver medals in the 100 m and 200 m freestyle and a bronze medal in the 200 m medley. She was already the outstanding athlete in her country. The positive experiences in Australia were exceeded in 2000 at her third Olympic Games in Sydney : With two silver medals in the 100 m butterfly and 200 m freestyle, she was the first female swimmer in Slovakia to win Olympic medals. Earlier in the same year she won her first title at the European Championships 2000 in Helsinki : the gold medal over 100 m butterfly. She was able to defend this title in Berlin in 2002 .

The successes did not stop in the run-up to her fourth Olympiad: In 2003 she became vice world champion in the 200 m freestyle in Barcelona and won the bronze medal in the 100 m butterfly. In preparation for the 2004 Olympic Games of Athens she managed in Madrid hat-trick as European champion over 100m butterfly. In Athens she was able to reach the finals over 100 m butterfly and 100 m freestyle, but she was only sixth and seventh.

At the 2005 World Swimming Championships in Montréal , Martina Moravcová reached seventh place over 100 m butterfly. Over this distance she won silver at the European Championships in Budapest in 2006 .

In December 2012 Moravcová ended her sports career.

Martina Moravcová studied economics in Bratislava and at the Southern Methodist University in Dallas , Texas , where she is now married and has a daughter named Karolína (born 2010). She graduated in 1998.

With six Slovak athlete of the year awards (1993, 1995, 1998, 2000, 2001, 2003), she is the most successful individual athlete in the survey to date.
