In 2003 the series was broadcast on the Hallmark Channel in approximately 100 countries. In German-speaking countries, the eight seasons of the series were broadcast by VOX in the afternoon. The series is based on a film of the same name , which takes place five years before the start of the first season and which already partly takes up the plot of the first season, but was shot with different actors.

action

When Jack McLeod died in 2001, he left the indebted Drover's Run cattle ranch in the Australian outback to his daughter Claire ( Lisa Chappell ) . Left on her own and beaten by the death of her father, Claire must now try to save the farm from bankruptcy.

One day her half-sister Tess ( Bridie Carter ), whom she has not seen for more than 20 years , suddenly shows up. According to Jack's will, she owns half of the property. In contrast to Claire, the city dweller has absolutely no idea of agriculture and livestock farming, nor is she interested in keeping her part of the property. Instead, she plans a sale to open a coffee shop in her hometown with the profit.

But after Tess has experienced first hand what hard work her sister does every day, she decides to stay. Little by little the two adapt and understand each other. Claire teaches Tess how to ride, drive cattle, and understand farming. Tess, in turn, teaches Claire to open up to things and to be more optimistic about life.

Together with the dropout Becky Howard ( Jessica Napier ) and the mother-daughter team Meg ( Sonia Todd ) and Jodi Fountain ( Rachael Carpani ), they face all problems and challenges. The Ryan family, who live on the neighboring farm, are of great help. Brothers Alex ( Aaron Jeffery ) and Nick Ryan ( Myles Pollard ) have known the McLeods from childhood and are always there when their help is needed. Nick marries Tess at the end of Season 4 and goes to Argentina with her (Season 5). Claire and Alex would have married too if Claire hadn't been killed in a car accident (season 3).

Over time, it turns out that Jodi is the illegitimate daughter of Jack McLeod and also receives a share of the farm. She runs Drover's Run at times with Stevie Hall, a childhood friend of the late Claire, until she goes into the witness protection program with her fiancé and future husband Matt Bosnich. Stevie and Alex get married too, but Alex dies in an accident a little later. Stevie is now supported by Grace, Regan and Jaz McLeod, the daughters of Jack's brother. At the end of the series, Jodi returns.

Characters

Resident of Drover's Run

Claire Louise McLeod is an experienced rancher and horse rider. After the death of her father Jack McLeod, she initially continued the Drover's Run ranch on her own. Claire is tough and ambitious, but very clumsy about her love life. It is only when her half-sister Tess appears that Claire discovers her warm, feminine side and begins to see life on Drover's Run with completely different eyes. Over time, Claire develops a deep affection for Tess and the two become an inseparable team. Over the course of the series, she falls in love with Peter Johnson and dreams of a life with him, but has to learn from Becky that he is already married and has two children. Thereupon she separates from Peter and withholds from him that he is pregnant. She eventually gives birth to a daughter named Charlotte. She finally finds the love of her life in her neighbor Alex Ryan, whom she has known since childhood. But the relationship comes to an abrupt end when Claire dies in a car accident. Tess, who was in the car, can save herself and Charlotte. Claire is buried next to her father on Drover's Run .

Teresa 'Tess' Charlotte Silverman McLeod-Ryan was born on Drover's Run . After her mother divorced Jack McLeod, they both moved to Melbourne . After living in the big city and after her mother's death from breast cancer , she returns to Drover's Run 20 years later . Tess is more adventurous than her half-sister Claire, but also more awkward than her. Tess knows how to advise Claire on matters of the heart. At the beginning Tess falls in love with Alex Ryan, but both quickly realize that they don't fit together. Over time, she falls in love with Nick Ryan. But the two do not find each other. Instead, she has a relationship with widower Dave Brewer, to whom she becomes engaged. But since Dave has not yet got over the death of his wife, they finally split up. After Claire's death, Tess is devastated and cannot find peace. During this time, Nick is there for you. The two finally find each other and get married. Nick later gets a job in Argentina and is accompanied there by Tess. When she returns, she learns that she is pregnant. The joy of this is clouded when she hears that Nick's plane has crashed. Nick is pronounced dead, but it is later revealed that he was not on the plane. Both decide to go back to Argentina, where their daughter Claire Ruth is born.

Jodi Margaret Fountain McLeod-Bosnich is Jack McLeod's daughter, but she has not known for a long time and hates country life. She dreams of living in the city as a wealthy and successful stylist. From Tess she learns more about life in a big city. Little by little, Jodi begins to appreciate the farm life she has rejected for so long. She meets the mechanic Luke. Both become a couple, but forcibly separated from each other, as Luke faces a prison sentence for smuggling. At the end of the fifth season, it turns out that she is also a McLeod. She falls in love with Killarney's foreman, Rob Shelton, whose real name is Matt but is under a false name in the witness protection program. After Rob / Matt has to move again because of the witness protection program, they meet Riley Ward. But then Matt returns and Jodi has to choose between the two men. She continues her relationship with Matt and escapes with him when he is found again. Both end up faking their deaths and go into the witness protection program together. At the end of season eight, all the criminals are caught, whereupon Jodi returns pregnant and explains that she and Matt want to raise their child on Drover's Run .

Grace Kingston McLeod is the daughter of Hugh McLeod. She runs the ranch with Stevie. At first there seems to be more than friendship between her and Marcus Turner, but she falls in love with the new owner of Kinsellas, Heath. Grace finds out that Heath is cheating on her, breaks up with him and gets together with Marcus for a short time.

Jasmine 'Jaz' McLeod first appears on Drover's Run to distribute the ashes of her late father Hugh McLeod, Jack McLeod's younger brother. During this visit, Tess learns of a riding accident that killed Jaz's fiancé. As a result, she develops a fear of riding, even though she is a professional rider herself. After working a short time on the ranch and spending time with Alex, she regains her strength and courage to get into the saddle and leaves the ranch to return to competition riding. In Season 8, Jaz returns to Drover's Run and offers her help on the ranch. However, old tensions are building up again.

Like Jasmine, Regan McLeod is a cousin of Claire and Tess who appears on the farm. She begins a relationship with Dave, much to the dismay of Kate, who has distrusted her since arriving. That the mistrust is not unfounded is shown when Regan tries to dig for gold on the ranch. After a snake bite, she leaves the ranch, but returns one day. After a while, it can allay the distrust of the family and co-workers at the ranch. She and Dave resume their relationship, but later break up. Jodi, who goes into the witness protection program, gives her a partnership with Drover's Run .

Stephanie 'Stevie' Jane Hall-Ryan is Claire's best friend and is given the post of foreman on Drover's Run . After Claire's death, she becomes an important support for Tess and a best friend for Alex. When Tess goes to Argentina with Nick, she takes over the running of the ranch. After some difficulties, she and Alex find each other and get married and she becomes pregnant, but Alex dies shortly before the child is born. Stevie and her son (Alexander "Xander" Ryan) stay at Drover's.

Katharina 'Kate' Maria Manfredi is of Italian descent and part of a very success-oriented family. Jodi and Kate have been friends since school days and are very close. Because of her naivete, Kate is constantly blundering. She has feelings for Dave, who only sees her as a good friend. She later gets together with Dave's younger brother Patrick. The two split up later, however, and Kate eventually gets together with Dave. Both go to Africa together and start a new life there. During the course of the seventh season, Kate ends her relationship with Dave and returns to Drover's Run for Jodis and Matt's fake funeral . She is of great help to Grace. After Riley's death, however, she leaves the ranch for good to work on a farm with difficult-to-educate children.

Margaret 'Meg' Fountain Dodge has lived half her life on Drover's Run . She was already Claire's nanny. After Jack's death, she takes her daughter Jodi from boarding school and is more than just an employee for Claire. She helps her run the farm and has a relationship with farm worker Terry. In the end, she turns out to be a talented author. She is writing a book about her and Jodi's early family history. In the course of this development, Jodi learns that she is the daughter of the dead Jack McLeod. Jodi is deeply disappointed in Meg, so she decides to go away for a while. Terry and Meg get married, leave the ranch and go on a big tour of Australia.

Rebecca 'Becky' Howard comes from a troubled family. Claire McLeod takes care of her and gives her a job at Drover's. She does her job well and is soon promoted to foreman. Then she meets Brad 'Brick'. But after he drove to his uncle and did not show up for the agreed reunion at the fair, she started looking for her missing friend. She receives support from Jake. Some time later, she and Jodi find Brad / Brick dead in a waterhole. After overcoming her grief for Brad / Brick, she meets up with Jake. The two have the plan to start their own ranch. Shortly before Claire's death, she leaves Drover's.

Killarney residents

Harold 'Harry' James Ryan marries his first wife Liz in 1973. They have two sons, Alex, whom she makes Harry believe is his biological child, and Nick. When Harry learns the truth about Alex, he divorces Liz and marries the much younger Sandra. Harry is a success-oriented person who is hated and feared by many, but gives family a high priority. In season 6, Harry dies in a car accident. After Harry's death, it turns out that he was adopted by his parents and left home when he was 15, changing his name from Karl Wetherdon to Harry Ryan.

Alexander 'Alex' Marion Ryan is the alleged son of Harry Ryan. When he learns that this is not his birth father, he moves to his brother Nick's farm. After Harry's death, Alex inherits Killarney. He starts a relationship with Claire McLeod. He can't cope with her death for a long time. A few years later, he married Fiona, who played him pregnant in order to bind him to her. When Alex learns of this, he divorces and some time later marries Stevie. Shortly before their child is born, he is struck by a falling branch and dies.

Nicholas 'Nick' Gary Ryan takes care of his father's business before starting his own farm. In general, he cares much more about money than his older brother. He is very limited in his work as a farmer due to an old rodeo injury. He falls in love with Tess, but she doesn't dare to enter into a relationship with him. So he starts a relationship with Sally. This ends, however, when Sally realizes that Nick still has feelings for Tess. The two find each other and get married. After the wedding, Sally returns and claims that Nick is her son's father. He and Tess eventually move to Argentina. He is pronounced dead after a plane crash, but it turns out he was not on the plane. Meanwhile, Tess is pregnant and they both finally decide to move to Argentina, where their daughter Claire is born.

Sandra Kinsella-Ryan was a friend of Alex. She is Harry's second wife. She is the owner of the farm "Kinsella's" and has co-determination rights on Killarney. After a miscarriage, Sandra and Harry's marriage falls apart. Harry finally wants to divorce her. To prevent this from happening, she overdoses Harry's heart medication. However, as a result of Sandra's plan, Harry does not become a nursing case, but dies from the consequences. Sandra cannot cope with the death of her husband and therefore wants to throw herself off a cliff near Harry's grave, which Stevie can just prevent.

More characters

David 'Dave' Enoch Brewer is a veterinarian and a very good friend of the Drover's Run residents . He has a brother named Patrick and lives with Alex. He has already been married twice. He married his first wife in college, but the marriage did not last long. His second wife was killed in a car accident, which he could not deal with for a long time. He was engaged to Tess for a while, but she eventually decided on Nick. At the end of the sixth season, he meets Kate. Together they move to Africa for a year, where Dave is supposed to help an international team of veterinarians. Both later realize that they have no future together and end their relationship.

Patrick 'Pat' Michael Brewer is the younger brother of Dave. He is manic-depressive and therefore in medical treatment. Pat starts working as a farm helper on Killarney, but is fired by Sandra. He gets together with Kate, but the relationship doesn't last long. In the seventh season, Pat meets Tayler. They eventually become a couple. Before Tayler and Pat get together, Pat was in a relationship with Ashleigh, the half-sister of Alex and Marcus.

Terrence 'Terry' Dodge started the series as a farm worker and later a foreman on Killarney. However, after an argument with Harry Ryan, he quits. Terry is the longtime partner of Meg Fountain and thus also a surrogate father of Jodi. After his resignation, he takes over the gas station on site, which is also bought by Harry. After Meg and Terry get married, they leave the farm to go on a long tour of Australia. Terry is the calming pole on the farm who loves to listen and give advice. As the series progresses, it emerges that Terry used to be the exact opposite until he accidentally killed an opponent in a bar fight and went to jail for it, where he changed his life completely.

Matthew 'Matt' Bosnich (formerly Rob Shelton) was the foreman on Killarney under the name Rob Shelton. Initially very closed, he opens up especially to Jodi. He confides in her that he is in the witness protection program because a work colleague of his was a big dealer. This killed Matt's wife and their son to prevent Rob / Matt from giving evidence in court. With a trick, the gangsters learn of Jodi Matt's new whereabouts. In the seventh season, Matt comes back. He and Jodi get closer over time. Since Matt has to flee again, he and Jodi fake their death. At the end of season eight, they both return to the ranch.

Fiona 'Fee' Lauren Webb is the ex-wife of Alex Ryan. They'd met early in season six, got engaged within a week, and married shortly afterwards. Fiona is unable to have children due to a uterine abnormality, but does not tell Alex about it. Fee pretends to be pregnant in order to keep him attached. Alex finds out the truth and breaks up with it.

Rose Hall-Smith is the daughter of Stevie, but did not grow up with her mother, but with her sister Michelle. Michelle had always told Rose she was her mother and Stevie her aunt. That's why Rose is shocked when she learns the truth. Stevie and Rose get closer over time.

Tayler Jane Geddes is the daughter of a man who died in a mine accident. Because Regan was a project overseer at the time of the accident, Tayler believes that Regan is responsible for her father's death. Tayler wants revenge on Regan, but her plan for revenge fails. Instead, she gets a job on the farm and Regan and they become friends. Tayler eventually gets together with Patrick.

Marcus Turner comes to Killarney as an assistant from Bryce. He and Alex hardly get along at first. The tensions between them seem to be easing a little. However, when it turns out that Marcus is not only Bryce's assistant, but also his son and thus Alex's half-brother, the quarrels begin again. After the death of his brother, Marcus falls in love with Ingrid Marr.

Ben Hall is Stevie's cousin and comes from a difficult family background. When he comes to Drover's Run , he has broken up with his girlfriend Monique. Monique later shows up at the ranch and confesses her love to Ben, but the relationship has no chance. He later meets with Jasmine.

Riley Ward is a farrier who succeeds Matt as foreman on Killarney. He has feelings for Jodi, but she never got over Matt. Later he seems to be interested in Kate. When Marcus and Alex's sister arrives on Killarney, an ongoing confrontation begins that ends with Riley's dismissal. Riley disappears in a car accident and is pronounced dead.

Ingrid Marr is a veterinarian. She and Marcus often quarrel but eventually become friends and discover feelings for each other. Her husband, Paul Simpson, from whom Ingrid lives separately, appears and pursues her. He threatens to harm Marcus and the women on the ranch. Ingrid therefore flees and fakes her death. Paul is later arrested, and at the end of the last season Ingrid and Marcus finally find each other.

Alberto Borelli is Italian and meets Jodi when he saves her. He then has to go back to military service in Italy, but returns to Drover's Run after a year. He and Jodi almost got married, but Jodi realized on the wedding day that she wasn't ready for marriage. On the same day Alberto returned to Italy.

Moira Doyle appears in brief supporting roles in the first few seasons. She is the owner of a hardware store in Gungallan until her husband separates from her because of another woman and also ruins her financially. She then starts to work in Terry's truck stop and becomes friends with him. She has three children, who are grown up, or the youngest daughter is at boarding school. Moira eventually ends up on Drover's Run as a housekeeper and farm helper. She also becomes a kind of motherly friend who is always loyal to help and advice. At first she appears as a clairvoyant at city festivals and fairs for fun, but it later turns out that she also has "real" visions. For the last two seasons she is with the - for the time being - rather unpopular Phil Rackich, but ultimately they split up at least spatially, because he wants to reconcile with his adult children and therefore wants to be closer to them.

Episode list

Background and interesting

  • In 1996, the Australian broadcaster Nine Network produced the television film McLeod's Daughters . When the Kingsford farm , where the film was shot, was up for sale 5 years later , the broadcaster caught up and bought the property. Kingsford is located between the Australian cities of Gawler and Freeling in South Australia and was farmed until 1999. This laid the foundation for the McLeod's Daughters series . The roles from the film were partly taken over, but mostly renamed and filled with new actors.
  • Drovers Run coordinates: 34 ° 32 ′ 56.2 ″  S , 138 ° 47 ′ 48.2 ″  E
  • Claire actress Lisa Chappell left the series at her own request to pursue her music career. Despite quitting, Claire McLeod is still the most popular character in polls.
  • Bridie Carter (Tess McLeod) also left the series of her own accord, as she wanted to spend more time with her husband and young son Otis
  • Marshall Napier , who plays Harry Ryan , is the father of Jessica Napier , who played Rebecca 'Becky' Howard in seasons 1 through 3 .
  • Unusual are the many deaths of some of the main and secondary characters in the series, the reason for which is often the actors' wish to quit. So the cast changed enormously from the 1st to the 7th season, only Aaron Jeffery and Rachael Carpani were still there from the 1st season, with Rachael leaving the series in the 7th season. Of course, some characters disappeared from the series for other reasons as well. In the middle of season 7, Aaron Jeffery also decided to take a break and left the series for good at the beginning of the eighth and final season.
  • It is also unusual that almost the entire eighth and final season of the series was shown in Germany before it was broadcast in its home country Australia on the "Nine Network" station.

Awards

At the Logie Awards 2004, the series won an award in the categories of Favorite Actor (Aaron Jeffery), Most Popular Actress (Lisa Chappell), Most Popular Australian Drama Series , and Most Popular Australian Series .
