Michael Köhler (born August 5, 1946 in Siegen , † May 2, 2005 in Munich ) was a German literary scholar , author , publisher and exhibition curator .

Life

Michael Köhler was born on August 5, 1946 in Siegen. His father was the painter and poet Reinhold Koehler (1919–1970). From 1968 to 1973 he studied American , English , German and political science in Munich. In 1973 and 1974 he went to study in the USA: at Yale University in New Haven he took courses in American literary studies, art and architectural history . During a research stay at the University of Connecticut in Storrs, Köhler worked in the Charles Olson Research Collection. A dissertation on Charles Olson, on which he worked in Munich from 1975 to 1977, remained unfinished. From 1973 to 1977 and again later in 2001, Köhler was a lecturer in American studies at the Ludwig Maximilians University in Munich and in 1980 lecturer at the summer course at the Jack Kerouac School of Disembodied Poetics in Boulder, Colorado . From 1980 to 1984 he pursued further studies in media theory and art history in Munich. In addition to teaching at the university, Köhler has worked as a freelance journalist for magazines and radio since 1977. Since 1972 he has been co-editor of Edition S Press , which was based in Hattingen in the early years , a tape and cassette series with recordings of readings by representatives of the Beat Generation and contemporary authors, mainly from the fields of modern poetry, sound poetry and concrete poetry . The company concept was based on “internationality” and “authenticity”, with the latter referring to participation in the production process, be it through reading in or directing. Thematically related books and records from other publishers complemented the mailorder range. Edition S Press emerged from a gallery that Köhler's sister Angela had run since 1969 with her partner Nicolaus Einhorn and the artist Axel Knipschild. The "S" came from the street name of the first address and the "Press" came from the published graphic editions. The name was retained, although in 1970 the focus had started to change.

In 1980 Köhler took over the sole editing of S Press - from Munich - and founded the S Press agency together with Wolfgang Mohrhenn. The distribution company S Press Distribution was added in 1998. From 1984 Michael Köhler worked as a freelance exhibition curator with a focus on photo art and modern literature (Projektbüro Köhler + Partner). He realized numerous exhibitions and related publications, including Allen Ginsberg - Reality Sandwiches (1989) and Call me Burroughs - A Pictorial Biography 1914–1994 (1994). In 1997 Köhler founded an online museum of modern poetry, and a year later he developed Fotorama , an information platform for international camera art on the Internet. He was also active in the European Society for the History of Photography (ESHPh).

Michael Köhler died on May 2, 2005 in Munich.
