In the period from 2009 to 2010, Matz commanded the airmobile Jägerregiment 1 in Schwarzenborn . For the deployment in Kundus (mainly rescue operations and evacuation operations), a step-by-step, six-month preparation in Schwarzenborn and Hammelburg proceeded. The third deployment abroad took place in 2009/2010 with the Quick Reaction Force IV (rapid reaction force) in Afghanistan. During the winter months of 2012, Brigadier General Matz prepared the Mountain Infantry Brigade 23 in the NATO Joint Force Training Center in Bydgoszcz near Poznan in Poland for another mission in Afghanistan. The focus of the training was on security measures against booby traps and land mines , what to do in the event of a helicopter crash, the recovery of the injured and the training of Afghan security forces.

During this phase, virtual preparations were also made for the relocation of German armed forces. Brigadier General Matz has been in the North Regional Command in Mazar-e Sharif since February 2013, responsible for planning and coordinating military operations in this section as well as setting up Afghan military and police units. In his role as "Deputy Chief of Staff", Matz explained his area of responsibility:

We have to take into account the balancing act between supporting the Afghan security organs, the beginning of a troop reduction and the relocation of material in our planning. "

The undertaking has so far been considered a success. The “OP North” external base was completed south of Kunduz. Matz compared the situation with his mission in Baghlan in 2010 :

There are still attacks by the Taliban. But we have the situation under control. Our so-called 'hot spots', where we can expect attacks, have not increased . "
