geography

location

The Michelsberg rises on the north-western edge of the Ahr Mountains in the Hohes Venn-Eifel Nature Park . Its summit is 1.2 km east-northeast of the center of Mahlberg, which extends to the southwest flank of the mountain, and 1.5 km west-northwest of Reckerscheid . Somewhat away in the south is the village of Esch with its watershed location . All of the named places belong to Bad Münstereifel.

Natural allocation

The Michelsberg lies in the natural spatial main unit group Eastern Eifel (No. 27) on the border of the southern subunit Northern Ahrbergland (272.1), which belongs to the main unit Ahreifel (272), to the northern subunit Münstereifeler Wald (274.1), which is part of the main unit Münstereifeler Wald and northeastern forest Eifelfuß (274) counts. The western flank of the mountain falls into the subunit Münstereifeler Tal (274.0).

Mountain height and altitude

The Michelsberg is 586.1 m high according to a trigonometric point recorded on the German basemap  . Its summit, the height of which is also given as 588  m , is on the middle of three peaks. From the main summit the landscape leads over a 564.6  m high saddle to the north summit, also known as Hohberg ( 574.5  m ), and a 573.5  m high summit joins in the southwest . In the topographic maps of the Federal Agency for Nature Conservation , a 566.1  m high point can be found on the summit region .

Streams and watershed

The watershed of the Ahr and Erft runs over the Michelsberg . The rivers that arise on or near the mountain include the Schussbach in the west, whose water reaches the Erft northwest through the forest stream swelling north-northwest of the mountain . The Krumesbach, which rises in the south, flows directly into the Erft in the same direction . The brooks Escher Bach ( Trinkpützsiefen ) and Lamersbach , which begin near its source, unite on the Schmelz with the Brobach from Hummerzheim to the Buchholzbach and send their water south-south-eastwards through the Armuthsbach into the Ahr. The Liersbach (Rosensiefen), which swells north of the mountain, also flows there to the southeast .

history

Already in the early days people lived as hunters and gatherers on and around the Michelsberg, which is proven by numerous artifacts (microliths, etc.). Archaeologists date this to the Mesolithic Age (9,600 to 5,500 / 4,500 BC). Most of the artifacts are exhibited in the Hürten Museum in Bad Münstereifel. In Celtic, Roman and Germanic times, the mountain was a pagan place of worship and court, as the original name Mahlberg attests. There were sacrificial fires here until around 800  AD . After Christianization , the pagan name passed to the nearby village of Mahlberg, while the mountain was now dedicated to the Archangel Michael as the protector of Christianity.

On the southwest flank of the mountain there is a transmission mast / tower and a water tank next to it .

Pilgrimage

For many centuries , the Michelsberg has been the destination of pilgrims who come for the traditional pilgrimage every year on September 29th. A way of the cross leads to the Catholic chapel of St. Michael on the summit .

Protected areas

Parts of the landscape protection area (LSG) Mutscheider plateau ( CDDA no. 555558861; designated 2008; 48.9083  km² ) are located on the Michelsberg . Up to its flanks, those of the LSG extend to flowing waters, floodplains and slope areas in the Bad Münstereifeler Tal (CDDA no. 555558740; 2008; 3.5523 km²).

Hiking, traffic, leisure

The Michelsberg is often a destination for hikers and a popular excursion destination even when there is snow, as the meadow slopes are ideal for tobogganing and the paths in the vicinity of the mountain are suitable for cross-country skiing . State road  113 (Mahlberg – Scheuerheck ) runs west of the mountain and district road  50 (Mahlberg – Reckerscheid) to the south-east .

The viewing platform of the chapel tower offers an impressive all-round view of the Siebengebirge , the basalt peaks of the Hohe Acht , the Hochthürmerberg and Arembergs as well as the Schneifel and Rureifel . When visibility is good, you can even see the towers of Cologne Cathedral , which is around 50 km away .
