The Middlesex County is a county in the state of Massachusetts of the United States . The county seat is Cambridge and Lowell . After the county government was abolished in 1997, the county only exists as a historical geographic region and serves some administrative purposes. It is the 10th richest county in the United States according to Forbes Magazine .

government

Like a slim majority of Massachusetts counties, Middlesex County no longer has a county government. All previous functions of the county were taken over in 1997 by state authorities. The sheriff and a few other regional officials with special duties are still locally elected to serve within the county. The municipalities now have greater autonomy and can conclude regional contracts to offer services together.

The county borders New Hampshire to the north and has an area of ​​2195 square kilometers, of which 63 square kilometers are water. It is bordered in a clockwise direction by the following counties: Hillsborough County, New Hampshire , Essex County , Suffolk County , Norfolk County, and Worcester County .

Middlesex County was one of Massachusetts' four founding counties in 1643.

According to the 2000 census , Middlesex County's population was 1,465,396 in 561,220 households and 360,864 families. The population was composed of 85.88 percent white, 3.36 percent African American, 6.26 percent Asian and 0.15 percent Native American. Hispanic or Latino of any race was 4.55 percent of the population. The per capita income was $ 31,199; 4.3 percent of families and 6.5 percent of the population lived below the poverty line .
