The Misfits (German: outsider ) are an American punk band that was first founded in 1977. She is considered the founder of horror punk , which mixes punk rock with the sound of rockabilly and doo wop and thematically focuses on horror. The band exerted strong influences on American punk rock ( NOFX , Pennywise , AFI among others) and metal ( Metallica , Megadeth among others).

Band history until 1984

Beginnings

After Glenn Danzig had taken over the vocals for several other bands from Lodi (New Jersey) , he founded The Misfits in March 1977 . First bass player was Diane DiPiazza , but after a short time Jerry Only (real name Gerald Caiafa) took over the bass. Manny Martínez was the drummer. During the first rehearsals, songs were played that have not yet been released , including Harpies in the Night and West End Avenue . In 1977 they recorded the first single Cough / Cool , which was released on their own label Blank Records, and had their first appearances. After a short time, Franché Coma (bourgeois Frank Li Cata) was accepted into the band as guitarist.

Bullet

After a few more appearances, Manny was replaced as drummer by Mr. Jim (real name Jim Catania). In January 1978 they began recording their first LP Static Age , which remained unreleased until 1997, instead the band released the EP Bullet , which was released on Danzig's label Plan 9 Records (after Plan 9 from Outer Space ). During a tour in October 1978 Franchè Coma left the band, the Victims' guitarist was hired as a temp for a short time and finally replaced by Bobby Steele in November. At the end of this tour, Joey Image (real name Joey Poole) was accepted as the new drummer.

In January 1979 the Misfits began to record some new songs, which were released on the EP Horror Business , on the cover of which the band's logo, the Crimson Ghost, can be seen today. Three of the eight recorded songs were released on the EP Night of the Living Dead in June and sold after one gig on Halloween . At this concert, the Fiend Club, their fan club, was founded, through which one could purchase merchandise and recordings. A month later a tour of England started, which was canceled after a few days because the band was dissatisfied with the fee and the instruments. As their return flight was not planned until December, Jerry Sid visited Vicious ' mother and Danzig and Steele ended up in prison for a short time, where Danzig wrote the London Dungeon . In December they managed to fly back with money from Jerry's father, Image left the group because of this tour.

In early 1980 the EP Beware was released with a new title, Last Caress . After a four month hiatus without a drummer, they hired Arthur Googy in April and three months later they played one last show with Steele, who was replaced by Jerry Only's brother Paul Doyle Caiafa and founded The Undead . Sessions resulted in 12 tracks for a new album, which can be found on the unreleased album 12 Hits From Hell (2001). Bobby Steele took on material for this, as Doyle only played his first show with the Misfits on Halloween 1980.

Live (2008)

Walk Among Us

The new album was supposed to be released in April 1981, but instead they only released an EP called Three Hits From Hell . In July the Misfits recorded some tracks for their official first album and Danzig released his single Who Killed Marilyn? on which he played all the instruments himself. Two months later, after a break of a year, they appeared again in clubs and took photos for the new album, but some of them did not appear. In the summer, the new LP called Walk Among Us should appear on Plan 9 Records, but the members signed a contract for only one LP with Slash Records, which is why most of the songs had to be re-recorded and the track list had to be revised. After a few gigs and radio appearances, they sold their single Halloween on October 31st before a show and in November We Are 138 was recorded for the EP Evilive at a concert . Although there was an entire recording of the concert, only this song was selected. In late November and early December, the Misfits gave some interviews and recorded another title for the live EP Evilive .

In January 1982 Glenn flew to Los Angeles to release the LP Walk Among Us . Over the next three months they played a few concerts, Slash Records also wanted to organize a gig with the Flesh Eaters to promote the album, but couldn't. At a show on April 10, 1982 there was violent clashes between the band and the audience, a few days later they recorded more songs for Evlive . The plan to record the EP Earth aD was initially discarded and they played a few shows with temporary drummers in May until they rehearsed with Eerie Von and decided to record him, but this declined because he wanted to stay with his current band . They played a few concerts with the drummer of the Necros until Robo, drummer at Black Flag , arrived in the USA and was informed by Henry Rollins that the Misfits were looking for a drummer. Since all members had finished school, they started a new tour in September and started recording Earth aD after a gig

Earth a. D.

In March 1983 they recorded the video for Brain Eaters after an appearance , the beginning of a video for Skulls was also filmed, but never completed. In the same month, Danzig indicated in interviews that he wanted to start a new band, for which he had already written songs, and told Henry Rollins at a show that he would be leaving the band for Samhain . They dropped the original idea of releasing Earth AD as an EP and decided to include some songs that they played live and two songs ( Death Comes Ripping and Bloodfeast ) that Danzig had written for Samhain. The album was released in December 1983 under the name Earth aD / Wolfs Blood (Europe: Wolfs Blood / Earth aD ).

Samhain rehearsed again in September with an alternative line-up and the Misfits wanted to work again with Googy, who asked for too high a fee, which is why they decided on Brian Damage. Since the long tour was over and two albums were to be released there, Jerry and Doyle thought about a tour in Germany, but they could only rehearse once with Brian Damage. The Misfits played their last gig two days before Halloween. Damage was drunk though, so they had to do the show with Necros drummer, Todd Swalla.

Samhain was officially founded in 1984 and the EP Die Die My Darling was released, 1985 "Legacy Of Brutality" and 1986 Collection I. In the same year Danzig wanted to re-record together with Eerie Von Walk Among Us and release it on Plan 9 Records, they closed the But never work off. Parts of the recordings can be heard on Collection II.

Founded in 1995

In August 1987, Doyle and Only formed a Christian metal band called Kryst The Conqueror, and the band was already rehearsing with the later Misfits drummer Dr. Chud. They never played live and didn't release any recordings for the time being because they couldn't find a singer. Their only EP, Deliver Us From Evil , was released in 1992 with Jeff Scott Soto on vocals. Some of the band's songs were later rewritten and used for the new Misfits.

In 1994 Jerry Only, Doyle, Robo, Franché Coma and Glenn Danzig met in court and in August of that year Jerry Only confirmed for the first time that the band would play together again, but that Danzig would not be there and they were therefore looking for a singer . On Dez Cadena's birthday in June, Jerry, Doyle and Dr. Chud Misfits songs again with the Sardonica singer and rehearsed a little later with her future roadie, Jonathan Grimm. On New Years 1995 it became clear that the band was allowed to perform again under the name Misfits . In March 1995 they rehearsed for the first time with Michale Graves , who until then hardly knew the Misfits, which is why he bought Collection I as soon as possible to learn the songs. Three months later, Jerry asked about other singers, but most of them declined. On October 27, 1995, the Misfits played for the first time in their later line-up: Jerry Only, Doyle Wolfgang von Frankenstein, Dr. Chud and Michale Graves a concert that only members of the Fiend Club knew about. Four days later they played for the first time in front of a normal audience during a Type O Negative Show. At the end of the year they recorded the Kryst The Conqueror song Dr. Phibes Rises Again with Graves.

American Psycho

They embarked on a European tour in early 1996 that included old Misfits members on stage and in May they recorded 13 new songs, their first new studio material in 13 years. At one show in August, Graves attacked one of the technicians, had to go to jail for a few days and couldn't be at the next two concerts, which is why Jerry Only and people in the audience sang at these shows. Their "Resurrection" tour ended at the end of August, and in April of next year they started again with recordings for the album American Psycho and signed a contract with Geffen Records. The new album came out a month later and they began recording the music videos for Dig Up Her Bones and American Psycho . On the tour in June, where old members of the band were again present, they played as the opening act for Megadeth . At a gig in October they played some Ramones cover songs with Joey and Marky Ramone and at the end of the year Jerry Only went on tour with the Ramones.

After a couple of shows in 1998, Michale Graves told the band that he couldn't sing on the South American tour, so they hired Myke Hideous for this tour. But since Graves noticed that the band was rehearsing with Hideous, he decided to leave the band. After the tour, Graves rejoined the band anyway. Evilive II , a live album that was only sold to members of the Fiend Club, was released in August to bridge the waiting time for new material. The new album, Famous Monsters , was released a year later and contains the last original studio recordings to date. At the beginning of next year, Chud and Graves announced on their site, as well as Only on the Misfits website, that the Misfits had split up, but they toured together again a few months later, but Chud and Graves left the band at the end of the year . Jerry Only and Zoltán Téglás ( Ignite ) sang the rest of the tour , the post of drummer changed often. In April 2001, the band started the M25 tour, in which Doyle was no longer present due to disagreements with Only. In a conversation that was held later, Doyle cited the reason that due to the numerous changes in members in the band, the necessary cohesion and identification were missing. In an interview with Kin Kats magazine in 2009, he said: “There was no band structure and no singer. And there is still no singer or new material. That wasn't what I wanted. I wanted a new band with my own material, not a cover band. But someone saw it differently. "

The line-up of the "M25" tour, the tour to mark the 25th anniversary of the Misfits, consisted of Jerry Only, who now did the vocals as well as the bass, Dez Cadena from Black Flag on guitar and Marky Ramone from the Ramones on drums. It was with this line-up that the 2003 album Project 1950 was recorded, on which cover versions of some hits from 1950 to 1960 can be heard. In 2005 the line-up of the drums changed again and one of the former drummers returned, Robo.

Jerry Only (2008)

The Devil's Rain

Both Danzig and Doyle were negative about the newly formed Misfits . Danzig, for example, criticized the fact that Jerry Only, as the last remaining member of the original line-up, used the name Misfits : “That is pathetic. He just lives by name. Are there people who think that's a good thing? Jerry has to use the name Misfits to do anything at all. ”Doyle also believes,“ They're not the Misfits. ”He described his relationship with his brother as broken. They weren't in contact and Jerry wasn't talking to him. On October 27th, 2009 the single Land of the Dead was released, which is the band's first own studio material since 1999. In 2010 Robo had to leave the band. Only cited recurring problems due to his Colombian passport as the reason, which made constant touring impossible. He was replaced by Eric "Chupacabra" Arce of Murphy's Law , who had previously jumped in on their 2000 and 2001 tours. With this line-up, the band went on a European tour in 2011, where they played as headliners at the Wave-Gotik-Treffen in Leipzig . On October 4th the new album The Devil's Rain was released , which was produced by Ed Stasium .

On February 5, 2013, the live album Dead Alive! recorded on October 31, 2012 ( Halloween ) at the BB King Blues Club in Times Square, New York. In April 2013, Glenn Danzig's band Danzig performed a Misfits set with Paul Doyle Caiafa on the occasion of their 25th anniversary.

Dez Cadena announced his departure from the band in June 2015 via Twitter. In its place came Jerry Caifa II, with whom the double single Vampire Girl / Zombie Girl was released on November 14, 2015 .

The reunification (since 2016)

In May 2016 the band announced that they would headline the Riot Fest in Denver and Chicago for the first time since 1983 with original singer Glenn Danzig , original guitarist Doyle Wolfgang von Frankenstein and original bassist Jerry Only . Dave Lombardo (ex- Slayer ) was appointed drummer for the reunion of "The Original Misfits" .

Music genre

The style of the original Misfits was poorly produced due to a lack of time and financial resources and was based heavily on that of some hardcore punk bands, such as the Dead Kennedys or Black Flag . Glenn Danzig's distinctive vocals, which are often compared to Elvis Presley's or Jim Morrison's , are particularly noticeable among the old pieces . The lyrics were often influenced by horror films from the 1950s and 1960s. In contrast to other punk bands, most of the pieces from the Danzig or Graves era are melodically based on the pop songs of the 50s and 60s, which are now often referred to as oldies .

The sound since the reunification in 1995 is much more metal , because of the often “tinny” and harder sound of the guitar . The songs on the 2011 album "The Devils Rain" are far less aggressive in terms of lyrics and music than the band's earlier works. Some critics and fans therefore refer to the music as horror rock rather than horror punk. On "The Devils Rain" there are many songs with guitar solos, (among others The Devils Rain, Twilight of the Dead, Unexplained ) a noticeable change compared to the earlier albums. The reviews for The Devils Rain were mixed to negative overall.
