Szentgotthárd [ ˈsɛntɡotːhaːrd ] ( German St. Gotthard , Slovenian Monošter ) on the Raab is a western Hungarian border town in Vas County , which is surrounded in the north and west by Austria ( Burgenland ) and in the south by Slovenia .
The city is the center of the Slovenian minority in Hungary. In nearby Felsőszölnök (Oberzemming) they make up about 90% of the population.
geography
The distance to the Austrian border is 3 km, Fürstenfeld is approx. 20 km and Graz 73 km.
history
The origin of the city is that of King Béla III. Szentgotthárd Monastery , founded in 1183, was settled by French Cistercian monks and named after Saint Godehard von Hildesheim .
In 1664, at the beginning of Leopold I's reign , Count Montecúccoli won an important victory against the Turks in the battle of St. Gotthard / Mogersdorf . The main Ottoman army under Ahmed Köprülü , which was on the way to besiege Vienna , was caught when crossing the flood-leading Raab and defeated.
After the opening of a railway line, which established a connection to the Austrian city of Graz from 1873, several companies settled in Szentgotthárd, which contributed to an economic upswing and thus an improvement in the infrastructure. This positive development lasted until the First World War. Until around 1880 St. Gotthard was one of the most south-eastern places in the closed German-speaking area. Due to the Magyarization , the place became increasingly Hungarian, which is why it stayed with Hungary after the First World War. Because of the new border location and after the construction of the “Iron Curtain” in 1945, Szentgotthárd sank into insignificance. Szentgotthárd was promoted to town on the 800th anniversary of its founding. After the opening of the borders in 1989, but especially after Hungary's accession to the European Union, the city experienced a boom again, which was also reflected in cross-border projects.
The company Opel Szentgotthárd from this city produces engines for Opel .
