The name comes from its two most important mountain groups, Monte Leone and Gotthard massif .
Limits

- in the northwest to the Bernese Alps (part of the Bernese Alps in the broader sense ), separated by Goms and Rhone
- in the north to the Urner Alps (part of the Bernese Alps in the broader sense ), bounded by Furkapass , Garschen , Ursern and Furkareuss
- in the northeast to the Urner-Glarus Alps (part of the Glarus Alps in the broader sense ), separated by Oberalpreuss , Oberalppass and Vorderrhein
- to the east on the Adula Alps bounded by the Val Medel , the Lukmanier Pass , St. Maria Valley and Blenio Valley
- separated in the south by the Ticino and Verbano Alps (from west to east) by Antigorio Valley, Formazza Valley, San Giacomo Pass , Bedretto Valley and the Leventina Valley
- in the southwest of the Mischabel and Weissmies (part of the Valais Alps ), bounded by Taverbach , Simplon Pass , Chrummbach , Gondoschlucht and Divedro Valley
