Moses Peter Pelham (born February 24, 1971 in Frankfurt am Main ) is a German rapper , singer and music producer . He is the founder and managing director of the record label pelham power productions (3p).

Musical development

Pelham is the son of US blues musician Moe Pelham Sr. and a German insurance clerk. He first came into contact with rap when he was 12 while on vacation in the USA. In his school days , Pelham mixed and sold mixtapes under the name Pelham Power Tapes . His first commercial release was the single Twilight Zone , which was followed in 1989 by the solo album Raining Rhymes . The producers were Michael Münzing and Luca Anzilotti .

In 1993 he formed the hip-hop group Rödelheim Hartreim Projekt together with Thomas Hofmann . The debut album Direkt aus Rödelheim , released in 1994, sold over 250,000 records. Shortly after, he worked as a producer with Sabrina Setlur , initially under the name Sister S published. Later the first single under her real name Sabrina Setlur was released under the newly founded label pelham power productions (3p), which had a number 1 hit with Du liebst mich nicht .

After the Rödelheim Hartreim project broke up, Moses Pelham released his first solo album, Geiles Leid 1 , in 1998 . In 1999, Pelham was named Producer of the Year (1998). Sorrow Shared 2 followed in 2004, Sorrow Shared 3 in 2012.

Soul singer Xavier Naidoo also released on Pelham's label . Pelham produced the successful album Out of this world for him . Soon after, however, they parted in a dispute and fought a long-term legal dispute over exploitation rights, which was first decided in favor of Xavier Naidoo by the Karlsruhe Higher Regional Court on the grounds that his contract contained immoral elements. The revision requested by the record company was rejected by the Federal Court of Justice in 2004.

In the meantime, Pelham mainly focused on the production of artists such as Glashaus , UnterWortverdacht , Illmatic , Sabrina Setlur and Sebastian Hämer . Moses Pelham also moderated the radio show Nachtschicht every Sunday evening on the Hessian youth radio station planet more music radio together with Bayz Benzon until mid-2008 .

In November 2012 his new album Geiles Leid 3 was released , which made it into the top 10 of the German album charts. In the same year he was a jury member for the casting show X Factor .

In April 2017 the album "Kraft" was released by his band GLASHAUS, which he forms with Cassandra Steen and Martin Haas. From May 23 to July 11, Moses Pelham was a participant in the fourth season of the show Sing my Song - The Exchange Concert . In August 2017 he released his solo album “Herz”, which debuted at position 2 in the official German charts.

His 7th studio album Emuna was released in March 2020 . For Pelham, the name of the twelve-track album means: "This is more than belief, this is Emuna." In the official German album charts "EMUNA" reached the 6th place.

In the course of an “EMUNA” pre-listening event, Pelham was presented with the German Record Critics' Prize in February 2020 .

Trivia

  • Pelham hit the headlines in 1997 when he broke Stefan Raab's nose on the night of March 6th to 7th, following an Echo award ceremony. The background to this was the theming of Pelham in Raab's VIVA programs Vivasion and Ma 'kuck'n , in which Pelham was the subject of satires for a long time. Interviews and video clips were made fun of and viewers were asked to send tinkered Moses P “heads” into the show. In addition, Raab dubbed him “Möschen” on a show on his show. For the broken nose Raab got a smart money of 10,000 DM awarded. In addition, Pelham was sentenced in the criminal proceedings to a further fine of 40,000 DM. At first he did not want to accept the judgment and in this context formulated verbal attacks on the incident, which could be interpreted as a “call for violence against Stefan Raab”. One consequence of this was a temporary boycott of Pelham productions by the music broadcaster VIVA. The incident was addressed in 1997 by the German rap trio Creme de la Creme in their song Please hau mich nicht .
  • Pelham has been a vegetarian since 1999. He became a vegan in 2014, has been strongly committed to veganism ever since and repeatedly speaks out against factory farming and the killing of animals.
  • In 2006, Moses Pelham and Andreas Walter founded DigiProtect Gesellschaft zum Schutz digitaler Medien mbH in Frankfurt, with Pelham providing two thirds of the initial capital of € 25,200. After it became known in the meantime with the business model of the mass warnings and was renamed FDUDM2 GmbH , the managing directors of the company filed for insolvency proceedings on February 15, 2013. On February 15, 2013, the Frankfurt District Court ordered the debtor to “provisionally manage the assets”.
  • Moses Pelham is an avowed fan of Lena Meyer-Landrut and came at their concert in Frankfurt Batschkapp on 18 December 2017 under End Of Chapter One tour for the song Home / My home on the stage, they already exchange concert with had sung to him together.
  • Moses Pelham is occasionally active in the fine arts . The work of art “DeMo-Maus”, created by him and the pop art artist Devin Miles in the TV show “Mix up Art”, was auctioned in May 2018 for over 3,000 €.
  • Moses Pelham is listed as a writer at the Brauer literary agency.
  • He is considered a close friend of the Böhse Onkelz band . In 2012 he released the single Für die Ewigkeit , in the refrain of which he sampled the Böhse-Onkelz song Koma - A Night That Never Ends and used parts of the text. When the band made their comeback in 2014 at the Hockenheimring , he performed together with the Böhsen Onkelz.

Litigation with Kraftwerk

Pelham 's piece Nur mir , produced for Sabrina Setlur , contained - without prior consent - the 2-second sampling of a rhythm sequence of the song Metall auf Metall by Kraftwerk from the 1977 album Trans Europa Express , which was used repetitively as a loop . In contrast, Ralf Hütter and other Kraftwerk members sued the Hamburg Regional Court in 1999 for cease and desist and compensation for copyright infringement . Pelham testified in court that he found the sequence in his audio archive.

After judgments by several instances, the Federal Court of Justice (BGH) ruled in December 2012 that Pelham had thereby infringed copyright. The Federal Constitutional Court overturned this judgment on May 31, 2016 and referred the matter back to the BGH for a new decision. In view of the shortness of the sampled sequence of a few seconds, the latter did not take sufficient account of artistic freedom . With a decision of June 1, 2017, the BGH initially suspended the third proceedings there in order to have European law aspects of the legal dispute clarified by the ECJ in a preliminary ruling procedure . On December 12, 2018, the Advocate General of the European Court of Justice suggested that the judges should reach a restrictive judgment. In July 2019, however, the European Court of Justice ruled in favor of the cultural technique of music sampling. In its fundamental judgment, the ECJ spoke out in favor of music sampling - especially when it comes to small fragments of a piece of music. Accordingly, sampling can fundamentally violate the manufacturer's copyrights without the consent of the manufacturer. However, if it is changed and “not recognizable when listening”, artistic freedom should be rated higher. With a judgment of April 30, 2020, the BGH overturned the (second) appeal judgment of the Hamburg Higher Regional Court of 2011 and referred the matter back for renewed hearing. The case will probably have to be tried again before the Hamburg Higher Regional Court.
