Northern suburbs of Potsdam

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

The northern suburbs of Potsdam consist of the districts Nauener Vorstadt, Jägervorstadt and the Berliner Vorstadt and partly border on Berlin , only separated by the Havel .

Nauen suburb

Villa Gericke

The Nauener Vorstadt lies in front of the Nauener Tor and is dominated by free-standing representative villas and apartment buildings, which were built at the end of the 19th century for Prussian officers and senior state officials. In front of the Nauener Tor there are stately villas in which some prominent Potsdamers live, for example the publisher widow Friede Springer and Mathias Döpfner . In this part of the city with a closed cityscape of high design quality, the town hall of the city is located on Friedrich-Ebert-Straße , as well as the extensive park area Neuer Garten with the marble palace and the Cecilienhof Palace , which is known among other things for the negotiations on the Potsdam Agreement .

On the edge of the New Garden is the dairy restaurant with a show brewery that was reopened in summer 2003. During the GDR era, this building was located on the border with West Berlin and was not accessible to the Potsdam population. In the park you can find the Marble Palace (an army museum was located in this from 1961 to 1989 ) with an incomparable view of the Holy Lake . In the immediate vicinity is the "Forbidden City" on Kapellenberg, which is an almost completely renovated residential area, and owes its name to the fact that this area was closed to the population in the period after the Second World War because the Red Army and the KGB (Germany headquarters was here until 1990) had their facilities in Villa Quandt .

Alexandrovka settlement

Also worth seeing is the Alexandrowka with its beautiful historic wooden houses of Russian construction and the unique Potsdam Alexander Nevsky Memorial Church on the Kapellenberg. The extensively restored Belvedere on the Pfingstberg with a good view of Potsdam and its surroundings, and even as far as Berlin when the weather is clear, was opened to visitors again in 2003 after it was closed for decades by the GDR authorities and fell into disrepair. because from here an undesirable and unobstructed view of Berlin-Wannsee was possible.

Hunter suburb

The Jägervorstadt with the eponymous Jägertor lies directly between the baroque Potsdam city center and the Sanssouci Park . In this part is also the Volkspark Potsdam , which was laid out on a former military site for the Federal Garden Show held here in 2001 .

The historic vineyard terraces directly at Sanssouci Palace, with its slightly sloping location, are considered the most beautiful vantage point over the city and form lines of sight to the Babelsberg Park and the Neustädter Havel Bay . The predominant development here ranges from suburban country houses to detached villas to Wilhelminian style apartment buildings and administrative buildings (such as today's regional court), but there are also stately villas with medium-sized parks.

The large historic administrative buildings and military facilities such as the Prussian Guard- Uhlan barracks and the former NCOs in Jägerallee, as well as the former Werner-Alfred-Bad (built in 1913 by the Berlin architect Paul Otto August Baumgarten ) the historic district court Potsdam in the Hegelallee , in which the Jägertor is also located. In the Hegelallee (formerly Lindestraße) a promenade was laid out after 1990 , which traces the course of the former city wall from the Brandenburg Gate to the Nauener Tor . A modern justice center is currently being built in the former non-commissioned officers' school in Jägerallee, which will centrally accommodate the various courts located in Potsdam and which is scheduled for completion in 2008.

Berlin suburb

The Berlin suburb, protected as a monument, is located between Jungfern , Tief and Heiligem See in the immediate vicinity of the historic park of the New Garden and the city center. It is one of the preferred residential areas in Potsdam and borders Berlin-Wannsee . The boundary on the city side is the Berliner Tor , of which only one wing is left. It is mainly characterized by stately villas and extensive gardens, which were also used by the French and English military missions from 1945 to 1991 . But there are also one- and two-family houses as well as elaborate multi-storey apartments from the Wilhelminian era and from the beginning of the 20th century. In the villas there have u. a. Nadja Auermann , Wolfgang Joop , Ulrich Meyer and Günther Jauch their domicile. The Glienicke Bridge forms the transition from the Berlin suburb of Potsdam to the Berlin district of Wannsee . The area between the Tiefem and the Heiligen See was only opened up in the second half of the 19th century, after businesses had settled there.

But this is also the location for the city's various cultural institutions, such as the Hans Otto Theater , which opened in September 2006 and is located directly on the Tiefen See. The new theater building was designed by the Cologne architect Gottfried Böhm . But also commercial as software vendors ( Oracle ), the automotive design center of Volkswagen in the Schiffbauergasse, the Potsdam Hospital "Ernst von Bergmann" and facilities of a German telecommunications company are on both sides to find the Berlin Street. The Glienicker Bridge  - entrance to the Berlin suburb - connects Berlin with Potsdam. From there, there are extensive hiking and cycling trails in the direction of Cecilienhof , the Gothic Library and the shores of the Tiefen See. The Babelsberg district can be reached via the Humboldt Bridge.

On May 4, 2005, the Potsdam City Council passed a statute for the protection of the monument area of the entire Berlin suburb (Monument Area Statute Berliner Vorstadt) and thus placed this entire suburban ensemble under monument protection.
