NGC 3179 is a lenticular galaxy of the Hubble type S0 in the constellation Great Bear in the northern sky . It is estimated to be 325 million light years away from the Milky Way and has a diameter of about 175,000 ly.
In the same area of the sky there is u. a. the galaxy NGC 3184 .
The object was discovered by Bindon Blood Stoney on January 25, 1851 .
