NGC 3190 is a spiral galaxy in the constellation Leo , approximately 53 million light years from the Milky Way . The galaxy belongs together with NGC 3185 , NGC 3187 and NGC 3193 to the compact galaxy group Hickson 44 (HCG 44, Arp 316 (without NGC 3185), NGC 3190 group). Halton Arp organized his catalog of unusual galaxies into groups according to purely morphological criteria. This galaxy triplet belongs to the class of galaxy groups .

The two supernovae SN 2002bo and SN 2002cv were observed in NGC 3190 . The galaxy was discovered as a foggy object on March 12, 1784 by the German-British astronomer Wilhelm Herschel .

The southwest arm of the galaxy received its own entry in the NGC catalog ( NGC 3189 ), which the astronomer George Johnstone Stoney observed in January 1850.

The galaxy is shown on the standard desktop background image of the OS X Mountain Lion operating system .
