NGC 3521 is a low luminosity , active barred spiral galaxy with extensive star formation from Hubble type SBDC in the constellation Leo on the ecliptic . It is estimated to be 30 million light-years away from the Milky Way and about 110,000 light years in diameter.
Due to the irregular halo , it is believed that a collision with another galaxy took place. The long spiral arms are irregular and interspersed with gaps, giving them a flaky look.
The galaxies IC 671 and IC 673 are located in the same area of the sky .
The object was discovered on February 22, 1784 by the German-British astronomer Wilhelm Herschel .
