NGC 3500 is a spiral galaxy of Hubble type Sab in the constellation Draco the northern sky . It is an estimated 161 million light years away from the Milky Way .

The object was discovered by Wilhelm Herschel on April 2nd, 1801 . On his sky scan on the night of April 2, 1801, apparently using his usual method, north to south or vice versa with a fixed declination, William Herschel observed 15 objects whose reported positions were largely incorrect, an error that made the identification of the objects difficult , if not made impossible.
