NGC 5640 is a 14.7 mag bright spiral galaxy of the Hubble type Sa in the constellation Giraffe and about 642 million light years from the Milky Way.
It was discovered on December 20, 1797 by Wilhelm Herschel with an 18.7-inch reflector telescope, who described it as "eF, S, lE, nearly in parallel".
