NGC 5648 = NGC 5649 is a 13.3 mag bright, spiral-shaped radio galaxy of the Hubble type Sbc in the constellation Bear Guardian in the northern sky. It is estimated to be 232 million light-years away from the Milky Way and has a diameter of about 65,000 ly. a. the galaxy NGC 5655 and IC 1014 .
The object was discovered on March 19, 1787 by Wilhelm Herschel with an 18.7-inch reflector telescope, who described it as "eF, vS, lbM, between 2 vF stars, 300 power" (listed as NGC 5649 ). However, Herschel's position specification shows a deviation. Not only because the observation of Guillaume Bigourdan on May 23, 1887 under NGC 5648 led to the second entry in the catalog. Most modern catalogs equate NGC 5648 and NGC 5649 and assign NGC 5655 the number NGC 5649 .
