NGC 5653 = IC 1026 is a spiral galaxy of the Hubble type SABbc in the constellation Bear Keeper in the northern sky . It is around 162 million light years from the Milky Way .
The object was discovered on March 13, 1785 by William Herschel (listed as NGC ) and on May 11, 1866 by Truman Safford ( listed as IC ).
