NGC 7578 = Arp 170 is an interacting galaxy pair , consisting of an elliptical galaxy (NGC 7578B) and a lenticular galaxy (NGC 7578A) in the constellation Pegasus. The galaxy pair is estimated to be 550 million light years from the Milky Way . Halton Arp organized his catalog of unusual galaxies into groups according to purely morphological criteria. This galaxy belongs to the class galaxies with diffuse opposing arms .
The object was discovered by Wilhelm Herschel on September 18, 1784 .
