The Nemzeti Bajnokság 1996/97 was the 96th season in the history of the highest Hungarian football league . It began on August 10, 1996 and ended on May 28, 1997. From the beginning of December 1996 to the end of February 1997, the game was closed (winter break). MTK Budapest FC won the championship for the 20th time .
