The Nemzeti Bajnokság 1988/89 was the 88th season in the history of the highest Hungarian football league . Honvéd Budapest became champion for the eleventh time .

mode

The season was played back and forth. There were three points for a win, one for a draw and no point for a loss. In the event of a tie, a penalty shoot-out was played and the winner received another point. The last two placed had to be relegated, the two teams placed before that played two relegation games with a return leg.
