Neustift is a district of Freising in the northeast of the closed urban area .

history

Excavations carried out already showed a fortified hilltop settlement from the Hallstatt period . The Premonstratensian Monastery in Neustift, consecrated to St. Peter and Paul , was founded in 1141 by Bishop Otto I von Freising with the support of the Margraves of Austria. The place Neustift belonged to the corresponding Hofmark of the monastery. In 1803 the monastery was dissolved in the course of secularization and served as barracks from 1803 to 1905 . From 1906 to 1971 it housed a cloth factory as well as apartments and offices. Neustift has been the seat of the Freising District Office since 1987 . The former ballroom of the monastery is now the meeting room of the district council .

The community of Neustift, founded in 1818, was incorporated into Freising at its own request on January 1, 1905 because of its dire financial situation.

Neustift had a total of 6003 inhabitants in 2014. As of January 1, 2019, the population had grown to 6,796.
