Another three men, another baby (Original title: Three Men and a Baby ) is an American comedy film by the film director Leonard Nimoy from 1987 with Tom Selleck , Ted Danson and Steve Guttenberg in the lead roles. The film is a remake of the French original Three Men and a Baby ( Trois Hommes et un Couffin ) from 1985 and is based on the script by the French screenwriter Coline Serreau . Baby Mary was played by twins Lisa and Michelle Blair.

action

The staunch bachelors Peter Mitchell, Michael Kellam and Jack Holden share a penthouse in New York as a flat share and spend their lives with their work, parties and numerous love affairs. One day Jack promises to keep a package for a friend before flying to Turkey to shoot a film. After Jack's departure, Peter finds a baby in front of the door of the apartment, a note in the carrying basket reveals that it is Jack's daughter Mary. Her mother Sylvia cannot take care of the child for a while and asks Jack to take Mary into her home. On the same day Michael also takes a package from the porter's wife, but absentmindedly misplaced in the excitement about the baby.

Peter and Michael are initially completely overwhelmed with the situation. However, they manage to gain experience in baby care and after a few days to bring organization into the initial chaos.

When two men appear to pick up the package, as agreed with Jack, Peter and Michael mistakenly believe that it is about the baby and give the child to the strangers. Now Peter finds the actual package in the living room and notices that it is a drug delivery. When trying to make it clear to the two strangers that they have received the wrong "package", the two and Peter get into an argument in front of the house, which is only ended by a police officer. The men flee, but the police who observed the drug traffickers have now noticed the strange shared apartment. Peter first manages to get rid of the police while Michael hides the package in the apartment.

The next day the gangsters overpower the porter woman who was looking after Mary and devastate the apartment. Since they cannot find the package hidden in the diaper pail, they threaten to kidnap the baby if they do not get their goods.

When Jack returns home, he first tries to hand the child over to his own mother, who, however, does not agree to take the baby and encourages him to take responsibility. Jack quickly gets used to his father role.

Finally, the three friends outsmart the police and the drug dealers with a trick at the handover. Peter gets the drug dealers to admit that the three friends weren't doing any illegal business, while Michael is secretly filming it. Michael threatens to turn the action into a fiasco through his clumsiness, but Jack, paralyzes the elevator in which the culprits are while the police arrive. The friends have now been washed clean of the charge of drug trafficking and the real criminals have been convicted and caught.

The friends take care of Mary together and clearly enjoy their role.

After a while, Mary's mother Sylvia returns and wants to move to England with her daughter. Jack realizes that he has grown fond of Mary and is shaken, but cannot bring himself to ask Sylvia to stay with him. Shortly before leaving, Sylvia changes her mind: she wants to stay in the USA and asks Jack to help him look after Mary. Peter offers Sylvia to move in with them.

Original version, new version and continuation

The French original version, Three Men and a Baby , which is based on the book by Coline Serreau , was a cinematic success in 1985 in France and in the rest of Europe, including Germany. The US remake also proved so successful that a sequel was produced: Three men and a little lady . In the meantime, Tom Selleck has confirmed that another sequel has been under discussion since 2010.

criticism

The lexicon of international films judged the production to be “routinely staged entertainment.” Compared to the original, however, the film is “devoid of charm, esprit and really new ideas”.

Modern saga

According to a rumor that arose after the DVD was first released in the USA, one scene of the film shows a boy who is at a window behind the curtains. Allegedly, it is said to be the ghost of a boy who committed suicide on location or who is said to have died in an accident. In the meantime, however , this modern legend has been refuted. The human outline seen in the film was merely a life-size cardboard display of the actor Ted Danson, which stood awkwardly at the window.
