Street newspapers or street magazines (sometimes also referred to as homeless newspapers ) are local newspapers or magazines that are sold by people in social need and, in rare cases, are also edited. Mostly it is the homeless , but often also asylum seekers or long-term unemployed , who get low-threshold access to work, stay in contact with society and earn a low income.

principle

A fundamental principle of street newspapers is that the sellers receive at least 50 percent of the selling price as income. The sellers often come into conversation with the buyers, and some sellers now even have something like regular customers . In some cases, the purchase serves more to donate than to buy newspapers, so that many newspapers purchased remain unread. Sometimes the amount of money is rounded up by the buyer with a small tip.

All sellers are provided with a so-called seller ID. Depending on the newspaper, the sellers are assigned a sales point or they can determine the sales point themselves.

There are some binding rules for the sellers: It is forbidden to sell the newspaper while intoxicated or to consume alcohol during the sale. The salespeople should also not beg on the side.

history

The Vagabunden magazine, founded in 1927, can be seen as the forerunner of the street newspapers. Gustav Brügel, tramp and writer from Balingen near Stuttgart , published the first issue of the magazine Der Kunde . Gregor Gog took over from the second issue and founded the Brotherhood of Vagabonds .

The first street paper was founded in New York in 1989 and was called Streetnews. Two years later, inspired by the New York street paper, John Bird founded the first street paper in Europe - The Big Issue . He was supported by The Body Shop . The Big Issue has been sold in London since 1991 and was the model for many other street newspapers in Europe . The concept was also exported to other continents. The street papers The Big Issue Australia , The Big Issue South Africa , The Big Issue Namibia and The Big Issue Japan established themselves .

In 1987 and 1988 the first Berber letters published by Hans Klunkelfuß appeared irregularly, about four times a year, 8–12 pages on photocopied paper with an edition of 100 to 500 copies. Klunkelfuss and other homeless people use the sale of the newspaper they have produced themselves in order to secure their survival on the street independently of government aid. In 1992, BankExpress , later BankExtra , now Draussenseiter , was the first German street newspaper to appear in Cologne ; in October 1993 citizens in social difficulties - BISS in Munich and 14 days later Hinz and Kunzt from Hamburg joined them. In 2006 there were already around 30 street newspapers in Germany. In 2010 the total monthly circulation in Germany was 250,000 copies.

The awareness of the street papers was further increased when in 2003 the author Joanne K. Rowling allowed the street papers to print the first chapter of the latest Harry Potter volume free of charge two weeks before the official publication date, which was also done by a total of 24 German-language street papers (20 in Germany, three in Austria and one in Switzerland).

2004 paid tribute to the then UN Secretary General Kofi Annan on the day of Poverty (17 October), the work of street newspapers. He wrote an exclusive article on poverty that was printed in the street papers.

Today 200,000 people worldwide sell street newspapers and reach six million readers.

Umbrella organizations

Many street newspapers have joined together to form networks such as the International Network of Street Papers (INSP) or The North American Street Newspaper Association (NASNA). An extensive list of street papers from around the world can also be found on these websites. INSP belong to 112 street papers from 40 countries (as of 2011). The Homeless World Cup has been taking place under the auspices of INSP since 2003 , in which homeless people from all over the world compete against each other in a soccer tournament.

On April 1, 2000, the Federal Association of Social Street Papers was founded in Germany as the umbrella organization for German street papers. However, this umbrella organization dissolved again in spring 2008. Many German-language street newspapers from Austria, Switzerland and Germany are now part of INSP.

Awards

In 2010 the street magazines BISS (Munich), Donaustrudl (Regensburg), Riss (Augsburg) and Straßenkreuzer (Nuremberg) were awarded the Wilhelm Hoegner Prize by the Bavarian SPD parliamentary group . "The street newspapers have committed themselves to the goal of supporting people in need, in social difficulties, people who live on the street," said SPD parliamentary group leader Markus Rinderspacher at the ceremony in the Bavarian state parliament for the award ceremony.

At the end of 2011, the Bremen street newspaper Zeitschrift der Straße received a special typographical award . The International Society of Typographic Designers (ISTD) from London, the international professional association by and for typographers and graphic designers , presented an Award of Excellence to the street magazine designed by students from the Bremen University of the Arts . In addition, the design of the Bremen street magazine was awarded three times by the Type Directors Club (TDC) in New York City at the beginning of 2012 .
